My then g/f and I would do floats on the American River through Sacramento every summer. It was a great way to spend a hot day.

Haven't done that because every weekend I go up to our lake house and relax on this:

Yeah, hopefully your version of the Illinois river is better than what I have in Illinois proper. What we have here is a disgusting mud bath of farm chemical runnoff that is overrun with Asian Carp.

Edit: and yes, tubing down a river is a hoot. Just bring sunscreen and have a designated driver. Floating on a river in the summer with a cooler full of alchol is fun...but a recipe for not pleasant things to happen if you aren't properly preparred before drinking.

"Float the river?" Try, "cabrewing." And yes, more times than I can remember...mostly because I don't remember them.

I've always wanted to.

There isn't really much of interest in terms of "floatable rivers" around the NW Ohio region.

Sister lives in San Antonio region. Her and her husband always talks up river rafting, but every time I've visited the river has been too low. :(
I gotta make a point to visit next year during the summer. I just started a new job a few months ago, I don't get vacation until my anniversary. :(
