I dunno, I got bored, and I felt like making this sorta topic.

I work at the world's only Marine Avation Museum, so I'm pretty interested in the stuff, especially after playing BF2 for a while.

I also feel the American Military could be a little spruced up in terms of some of its equipment, like their M16A4s. -_-

They need to get those XM8 out or our guns will keep going down the crapper. Even though they're automatic, they're a bastardized version of the M16A1, which jams like a mofo, and that ain't good.
Also, any marines, soldiers, pilots, or anyone like that, I'd enjoy some of your comments.
So commence comments and questions in teh ATOT Military thread!

PS: If this is somehow a repost, don't sue me.

I enjoy playing turn-based tactical combat games with military hardware like Jagged Alliance 2 (mercenaries freeing a small country from a dictatorship) and Fallout 1-2-tactics.

I don't collect any of the real stuff, though.

Here's some cool sh!t.

That said, it only seems cool to us because our brains have been conditioned by the military-industrial complex to love high-tech (read expensive) weapons.

Not really, anybody who doesn't like blowing things up in new and different ways and is a guy needs his head examined.

That said, I agree with you. ;)

I still need some comments on the guns though, because the M16A4s seem to really suck. They're alright, but our enemy uses teh AK, and thats really adaptable and all that.

Btw, that link doesn't work.

Alright seriously, cut the crap, this is meant to be a spam topic where people talk about robotic crap that won't exist until the year 2142.

to comment on the XM8... um it's sad to say it's been cancelled, as was the entire OCIW program, much like the RAH-66 Commanche program (also cancelled).

funding is horrible for the military right now. at least they are getting those video visors out (buddy in the Army said he actually got to see some of the prototypes, and was told they will be out in full force in 6 years, with them starting to be rolled out close to the end of his current 4 year term), and by the way, those visors were one of the new fancy things in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (and all the other things are currently prototypes with plans for full-scale deployment to all troops.)
damn I'm looking forward to all of the new things because they should be fully deployed during my time in the Army. :)

They use it because it is extremely reliable in bad conditions. If you have to live in a cave between incursions and need your weapon to work in the worst of conditions without cleaning it for a month then the AK is the choice par exellence. The M16 is a reliable weapon if it receives proper cleaning and maintenance.

Fixed it.

The XM8 is really a descendant of the the Armalite AR-18 (as the HK G36 is as well). A completely different design incorporating a short stoke gas pistion system than the M16's direct gas sysyem.

I collect military small arms mostly from the turn of the century through the 60s.

Funny, I'm a pacifist and abhor violence and killing yet still watch war movies and play FPS (with the battlefied series one of the most-played next to CS:S)

For me, the demarcation between real-life and what happens on screen is absolute. It's fascinating how one can be enthralled by methods of killing - yet themselves recognize the inherent waste of money military spending can be. Hypocrisy on my part, I guess.

Speaking of the military, I just got back from spending 36 hours at the Gettysburg battlefield. My mom and I went there as my great great grandfather on her side died just six feet from the Union line at the hands of the 69th Fighting Irish. We hired a Civil War expert to take us on a three-hour guided tour of the battlefield and then this morning walked the .75 miles that General Pickett took to lead his Virginia troops to disaster. We also hiked Little Round Top and stood at the same place as Col. Chamberlain when he ordered the bayonet charge.

Did you know that 6,000 men died in 30 minutes during Pickett's Charge? Did you know that the volley of 250 Confederate and 200 Union Canon that preceded the Charge was the largest to that date?

If you think about it in those terms, 2,000 lost in Iraq over two years is amazingly low.

Big 20th century military buff here, esp WWII and Cold War stuff. Current military hardware doesn't have the same appeal.

I can speak from personal experience. The M16 (or as I know it, the C7A1, basically a slightly modified clone of the M16, with single and full-auto modes) is a flaming pile of crap. It's weak, jams, gets INCREDIBLY dirty and requires regular cleaning in order to function. I'd personally like a lightweight, compact carbine which fires 7.62mm.

The M249 (or C9A1) is much like the M16 in terms of reliability...when it gets a little dirty, it stops working. Good rate of fire, though, and the ability to fire from M16 mags is nice.

The M240 is a superior, AMAZING support weapon. Nothing feels better than watchin' that barrel glow a nice rosy-red after pumping through 1000 rounds in 3 minutes on direct fire. Your shoulder hurts after, but it's damn well worth it!

LOL, ok you win, but I didn't mean anything bad, I just wanted to make sure people didn't just crap on the thread.

I see your point in the M16, but it still jams when it fires, while the Klashnikov doesn't and its a bummer.

Yeah, its really stupid that got cancelled. As much a fan as I am of the Marines, they don't really need all that new crap like the F-35 JSF, hell, the F-22 isn't out yet, and there is hardly an air war going on/any real threat of planes being shot down.

Here billions of dollars are being spent on really cutting edge equipment, you'd think the Navy and Airforce would be satisfied with their SuperHornets and Raptors, while the Army is using Vietnam era crap. The tanks are good, and the arty I'd reckon, but the meat and potatoes, the Grunts, are fighting with weapons that jam even with good maintenance.

As well as the Army needing some new copters, the blackhawk is good, but the Chinook and the and all them need some sprucing up to the Osprey's levels.

[@ All the posters about M16's] Ah, I see now, but regardless, that wasn't the point. Point is, they need some new guns, these just aren't working it. They also need some better coordination, I was watching some movies about troops in their barracks getting bombarded by terrorists mortars...and the whole time I was thinking...wheres their air support??!!
These guys were getting slaughtered and they had no means to fight back.

Regardless, I think some new changes will have to be implemented to better the chances of the Army or this might end off worse.

[@ poster who liked tanks and trucks] I agree, while I do like planes and ships, I like truckks + APCs+ Tanks + Assault Weapons alot more.

It's because for every US casualty you hear about, you don't hear about the 25+ insurgents that got taken out ;)

I like military stuff, but only in the realm of fiction (computer games and such). Holding a real weapon in my hands makes me queasy.

Well yeah, that counts, I was just remarking about how cool this stuff is, but when you know how dangerous it can be, you get careful very fast. And thats good, it means you're responsible, and you're the type who the government when it drafted the Bill of Rights, had in mind. ;)

Anyone know of any other Army plans that are still in the works? I hope that new secretary of defense gets his act together and starts having it so that we're actually winning the war, in his opinion.

I could understand, when I shoot guns, I'm deadly careful, and some aren't and thats why there are accidents at these places.

Paintball is another sotry, but I had a friend who got shot in the eye (Paintball) because he lifted his mask to scratch his nose in a fire fire section of the park.

He's lucky he can actually see from it and play baseball and basketball etc
