I believe that the internet was more or less a product of BBN working with the government, (was GTE/BBN more recently and i think they were even purchased since then by another company...)
Regarding the WWW, that is a product of a young genius named Tim Berners-Lee.

I'm pretty sure about both of those facts above, but i could be wrong.
However, i'm sure if I am wrong about either AT will let me know.
