I've recently become good friends with someone i work with and we've been going out on his 30 foot boot the last couple of weekends.

It's great, we have about 10 people that come with us, and we cruise up and down the potomac, stopping at georgetown and what not (i live around DC)

I'm just curious if there's any other boat lovers out there? Right now, my money goes to my car...but i can definitely see a boat in my future.

What does it typically cost to shrink wrap a boat for the winter? What does it cost to keep your boat docked somewhere?

I know boats are basically money pits, but they're so much fun!

27 foot precision sailboat

Boat = Hole in the water for you to throw money in

Depending on the size of the boat and the place you can expect something 3000$ and up for the winter ...
Expect at least 5000$ extra every two years (repairs, ....) ...
Sailboat or power boat?
Gas or diesel?

Sailboat with diesel = cheap
Powerboat / gas = costs probably as much as flying to the destinations you are going

Well my dad owned a 26 foot "yacht" and mrs. skoorb's uncle owns a pretty large racing/cruising yacht (35-40 feet). These things, as mentioned, are total and utter money pits. Everything costs a ton of money. Just because you bought it in a boating shop plan on spending 5X the price what a similar part would cost in a normal store.

Yeah like "marine" oil
heh

I only have a boat if an 8-foot kayak counts, although I want to get a sailboat.
Someday.

I just found some....pretty sweet! It's no

Brigantine but for the price and size :D

I've been thinking I might be able to convert my kayak into a sailboat by mounting outriggers in the scupper holes and a mast in the central storage compartment, but I don't have time to fool with it :)

they say the 2 happiest days of a boat owner's life are the day he gets it & the day he sells it.

i'm waiting for my son-in-law to buy one so we can go skiing/fishing, but i think he's waiting for me to buy one.

I don't know about shrink wrapping. As for a docking, it will save you alot of money to keep it on the trailer in a storage
area than keeping it in a slip. One thing about keeping them in a slip is you have to watch the weather and go get it if
the conditions get to bad.

I'm on my second boat. They are alot of fun, they do cost money, but not as bad as most people like to say. Then again
I was a boat mechanic at one point in my life.

This is my current boat

Also, a decent website for boating, and especially performance boating is
OSO

Well I would guess that sailing boats are worse. You wouldn't believe how much a basic sail can cost or some winches or lines :Q

I grew up sailing nearly every weekend in Michigan (my folks owned a Sabre 36 sailboat). Now that I'm landlocked in Atlanta, I have to drive down to Savannah to mooch my grandfather's boat. J-22....very fun little sailboat. :)

20ft cuddy bayliner with a small, fuel effeicent 4 cylinder volvo inboard/outboard. Good for a weekend, fishing and water skiing. Paid 3k for it, trailer and all. The whole family uses it. I don't want sailing, I do not want to work at having fun. I do not want to wait for wind to get me from point A to point B. I tried that in Miami. Not as fun as skiing and fishing, and all around party fun.

Boats like that are available everywhere. 3-5k for a boat and trailer is well worth it if it floats and goes.

IMHO;)

Yeah, a slightly smaller boat that i could tow around appeals to me....but i have nowhere to store it! (1 car garage townhome just doesn't cut it)

maybe in the future.....

I store mine on the trailer at the lake and it costs me $20 per month. It is an out door storage though. I can get get
an indoor storage for around $70 per month.

1976 16' Shallow V speedboat 115 Merc outboard. Once hit 62 in it. Paid $2500 in '92, prolly spent another $1500 in maintanence since. I baby this one and after almost 26yrs, it looks better than several two and three year old boats I see on the lakes 'round here.

19 foot john boat.. best thing ever invinted for fishing... it looks like its straight out of one of those great fishing shows.

sohcrates-- cruising down the potomac is cool.. usually we go further upstream where the water is real shallow.. its great for fishing. Our little fishing boat would get swept away in the current down at the wider part of the river in DC near the bay.
