So which stores will go bankrupt because of weak holiday sales?

JEDI

Lifer
Circuit City, kb toys, Gateway already in bankrupcy.

i predict toys R Us.

Who do u think will file for Chap13 by March 2009?

edit:
Woolworths

it looks like Woolsworths is closing, again.

they were a big chain back in the 1980's then went bankrupt in the 90's.

I think all the fucking retailers are in danger of bankruptcy until they stop pissing off the consumer..

Here's some things they can do to fix their predicament:

1. Start selling cables at 100% markup rather than 1000% markup. Yes, you may sell one 6ft hdmi cable for $139.99. But, at that price, most consumers just get pissed off and order one for $9.99 on the Internet. And, since they're ordering the cable on the Internet, they start thinking they might as well order the whole damn HDTV on the Internet also.

2. Open more cash registers. Don't make me wait in line for 20 minutes when it only took me 10 minutes to shop. Move some of the worthless floor people to the register.

3. Reward your smart floor people. Go back to the commission model. The guy that's selling appliances should know a thing or two about appliances!

4. Stop limiting me to Windows Vista computers! Give me XP - or at least the ability to downgrade to XP myself. Consumers aren't so stupid that they'll settle for Vista Home Edition rather than XP Professional when they buy a computer.

5. Put real graphics cards in your computers. Seriously. You have 20 computers to pick from and the only one that can run Vista with the 'super pretty eyecandy' is the $2399 one that people don't even bother to look at because of the price.

6. Stop treating us consumers like idiots when the only idiots are typically the ones that work in your store. See #1, #3, and #4.

7. NO MORE MAIL-IN REBATES. (Some stores are already doing this.. kudos.)

8. Give me more goddamn stats! Along with a smarter salesperson, how about you post enough interesting statistics about the product that I don't have to go on the Internet to make an informed decision. I'm in the store.. I obviously want to buy something now. If there's so little information about the product that I have to go on the Internet to make an informed decision, I might just buy it on the Internet.

9. Stock higher quality merchandise. Yes, higher prices, so what.. I should not be limited to the Internet as the only place to buy a quality blender, tools, applianes, etc..

10. Stop annoying me with the intercom (this applies mostly to up-scale department stores.) I should not have to hear a chime when your phone rings or any other bullshit. Play some elevator music and let me shop in peace.

11. Stock something different than only mainstream crap. You make it so the Internet is required to buy anything out of the ordinary. For example... ceramic chef's knife, windows xp professional oem install, laptop docking port.. this brings me to the next

12. Stock some laptops that are worth a damn! You will not find a good laptop in a store. I repeat.. You will NOT find a good laptop in a store. Real laptops have docking ports, quality builds, and are not shiny!.. and this yet again brings me to the next

13. Stock stuff that a business would consider buying!!! Your laptops are barely stupid consumer grade. And, everything else is too.. You can't buy a commercial coffeemaker at a retailer. You can't buy a copy machine!

14. Be happy to see me! I walk in your store and you make me feel like I don't belong there - whether or not I 'should' be in there. Biggest offender: abercrombie. How about you attempt to make me feel good about myself? Train your salespeople to show me what I should be looking at... and again to the next..

15. Train your goddamn salespeople! Right now, they're morons. In almost every store, the salespeople are morons. But, that doesn't mean they don't have potential! Maybe it means you did not spend a single bit to train them in whatever they're selling!

16. Start listening to your customers. I am one. Obviously I care enough about how horrible the shopping experience has become to post about it. Yes, I'm criticizing it - but I'm also offering solutions along with my insults. It's free. Don't complain about it. Instead, make us consumers feel like our input matters...

@brxndxn

XP is now being "discontinued" good luck finding it in stores, however most of your post was solid.

stuff (long list)

To play Devils Advocate - this is your advice to stores facing bankruptcy boils down to treat you better, have better stuff they probably don't make a big profit on to begin with, reduce profit margins on the stuff they do make a big profit on, hire more people, hire better people, then pay them more to push you around and buy stuff with a bunch of "stats" about a product.

On top of telling hardware/computer manufacturers to change the way they build the new cheaper computers and put better components (video card) in while paying to license XP instead of enjoying whatever kickbacks they are getting for vista.

As a consumer : most of that would be nice, but I'm not sure this would help any retailer out wondering how to survive the holiday season and beyond.

most of the big chains deserve to fail. most are too big to actually control, what a joke. the number of intelligent business people is falling

I'm surprised they're not ALL out of business because every Xmas for the last goddamn 10 years we've been hearing:

"Oh noes!!!! This year's Xmas sales are lower than expected!!! The end is nigh!!!!!!"

Do you honestly think Best Buy will go under?

Filing bankruptcy isn't the same as going under. k-mart filed in 2002 and they are still around.

"2. Open more cash registers. Don't make me wait in line for 20 minutes when it only took me 10 minutes to shop. Move some of the worthless floor people to the register. "

You must not mean the only 2 floor people covering the entire floor with 10 customers lined up demanding attention? 🙂

"3. Reward your smart floor people. Go back to the commission model. The guy that's selling appliances should know a thing or two about appliances!"

Commission would be nice. Product knowledge? How many departments and how many products are one person suppose to know? I don't know about stores elsewhere, but most around here are stretched thin and it's a good possibility that the only person available to help you is a new hire who's lucky to have had a few days 'training' (see #15) 😉 unless you're lucky enough to get helped by someone who just happens to take a personal interest in the product you are looking for. Unless you want scripted product knowledge ($12 vs $250 HDMI cable anyone?). 🙂 At near minimum wage i'm sure you're lucky to be shown where the product is much less anything about it! 🙂

"5. Put real graphics cards in your computers. Seriously. You have 20 computers to pick from and the only one that can run Vista with the 'super pretty eyecandy' is the $2399 one that people don't even bother to look at because of the price. "

99% of people i've helped who say they want to play games on their computer turn out to want to play solitaire and 'pogo' games 😉 And even the base systems now can handle most games out there with the video card upgrade. no need to look at the 2k+ systems. (2-4GB of ram on the $4-600 base systems o.o)

"8. Give me more goddamn stats! see the last sentence commenting on #3

"10. Stop annoying me with the intercom (this applies mostly to up-scale department stores.) I should not have to hear a chime when your phone rings or any other bullshit. Play some elevator music and let me shop in peace. "

Hmm, explain more?

"15. Train your goddamn salespeople! Right now, they're morons. In almost every store, the salespeople are morons. But, that doesn't mean they don't have potential! Maybe it means you did not spend a single bit to train them in whatever they're selling!"

"Time is money friend" 😉 From what i've seen, training consists of watching boring cheeseball videos (possibly) followed by multiple choice questions which are forgotten as soon as you click next. Sadly i have to agree. Most of what i know is from experience.

"16. Start listening to your customers. I am one. Obviously I care enough about how horrible the shopping experience has become to post about it. Yes, I'm criticizing it - but I'm also offering solutions along with my insults. It's free. Don't complain about it. Instead, make us consumers feel like our input matters..."

Most customers demand too much. Knowledge for one... expecting employees to know about hundreds if not thousands of products inside and out. sorry what? you're angry because i can't help you figure out how to setup your router/ten-key machine/printer/voice recorder/computer/cashregister/anything electronic and/or you want me to be an expert in any other product we might carry even though i am only trying to be nice and help you because you had this dumbfounded searching look on your face and i decided to help instead of go to the bathroom 😀 not to mention demanding tech support from SALES people just because they sell the product AND demanding lifetime returns >.>

/perspective from the inside (bottom of the barrel)

I hope sears goes down. Their tools are of the lowest quality possible and I've never seen so many people paid to stand around.

This is the exact problem I'm talking about.. Your 'Devil's Advocate' is exactly what the retail stores are doing now. Obviously they need a change. As a consumer, I'm advocating a change - and pointing out exactly what I would change. Then, you're even saying that most of it would be nice..

So how do we make the connection between what the consumer wants and what stores need to do to survive? Oh wait.. It is the EXACT SAME THING. In capitalism, when you give the consumer what they want, you make money. The stores are flat out refusing or they are acting like they do not know what the consumer wants.

Somebody is always willing to satisfy demand. Right now, the demand is being satisfied by the likes of Amazon.com, Newegg.com, and the numerous other online retailers that listen to the consumers.

Dammit I don't want Kmart to go under - Walmart is another 5 miles away. 😛
And Kmart sometimes has crazy clearance sales. I bought two $50 comforters for $10 each, my curtains were $5 each, down from $30, and I bought two 2-lamp sets at $12 each, I think they were originally $30-$40.

No, most AT members will get pissed off and go online. Most people don't know any better, and just buy the Monster brand cables and surge protector to go with their new Bose electronics.

2. Open more cash registers. Don't make me wait in line for 20 minutes when it only took me 10 minutes to shop. Move some of the worthless floor people to the register.
Chronic understaffing. Kmart does it. Walmart does it. They always say that they're "trying to hire more people" as a way of shutting up people who complain about understaffing. If they overwork the people they have, it's easier and cheaper than hiring more workers.

3. Reward your smart floor people. Go back to the commission model. The guy that's selling appliances should know a thing or two about appliances!
Smart floor people know that going to Walmart/Kmart/Best Buy isn't the best idea, and that their stuff is a major ripoff.😉

4. Stop limiting me to Windows Vista computers! Give me XP - or at least the ability to downgrade to XP myself. Consumers aren't so stupid that they'll settle for Vista Home Edition rather than XP Professional when they buy a computer.
Talk to Microsoft. They're the ones that try to force people to move past WinXP.
I'd prefer that they just charge $20 for Service Pack 4, or even just for SP3. Whatever, something to give them a little bit more revenue to extend WinXP.

5. Put real graphics cards in your computers. Seriously. You have 20 computers to pick from and the only one that can run Vista with the 'super pretty eyecandy' is the $2399 one that people don't even bother to look at because of the price.
Already addressed - most people think of Solitaire or Flash games when they think of games, nor could they really tell a difference between 640x480 resolution and 1600x1200.

6. Stop treating us consumers like idiots when the only idiots are typically the ones that work in your store. See #1, #3, and #4.
Oh, I don't know. There are a LOT of idiots out there.

7. NO MORE MAIL-IN REBATES. (Some stores are already doing this.. kudos.)
Mail in rebates depend on lots of people forgetting to send them in. No more mail-in rebates means less rebates, period.

Real product stats means less shitty marketing tactics, meaning that the manufacturers have to make better products. That costs more money. We can't have that now, can we?

9. Stock higher quality merchandise. Yes, higher prices, so what.. I should not be limited to the Internet as the only place to buy a quality blender, tools, applianes, etc..
Don't shop at Walmart. 😉

10. Stop annoying me with the intercom (this applies mostly to up-scale department stores.) I should not have to hear a chime when your phone rings or any other bullshit. Play some elevator music and let me shop in peace.
Some places do this, to a degree. Giant Eagle is one such place - the floor associates all have radios.

11. Stock something different than only mainstream crap. You make it so the Internet is required to buy anything out of the ordinary. For example... ceramic chef's knife, windows xp professional oem install, laptop docking port.. this brings me to the next
Shelf space needs to be quite profitable in a retail store, moreso than it does in a warehouse.

12. Stock some laptops that are worth a damn! You will not find a good laptop in a store. I repeat.. You will NOT find a good laptop in a store. Real laptops have docking ports, quality builds, and are not shiny!.. and this yet again brings me to the next
.....

13. Stock stuff that a business would consider buying!!! Your laptops are barely stupid consumer grade. And, everything else is too.. You can't buy a commercial coffeemaker at a retailer. You can't buy a copy machine!
Business are more likely to buy in bulk, therefore they won't bother going to a retailer.

14. Be happy to see me! I walk in your store and you make me feel like I don't belong there - whether or not I 'should' be in there. Biggest offender: abercrombie. How about you attempt to make me feel good about myself? Train your salespeople to show me what I should be looking at... and again to the next..
:| Hi. Welcome to go fuck yourself, and have a nice day.

😉😀

15. Train your goddamn salespeople! Right now, they're morons. In almost every store, the salespeople are morons. But, that doesn't mean they don't have potential! Maybe it means you did not spend a single bit to train them in whatever they're selling!
Training costs money, and some people are too stupid to retain it, or else they just don't care. And if a majority of the customers are morons too, it all works out.

16. Start listening to your customers. I am one. Obviously I care enough about how horrible the shopping experience has become to post about it. Yes, I'm criticizing it - but I'm also offering solutions along with my insults. It's free. Don't complain about it. Instead, make us consumers feel like our input matters...
That's what they'll try to do first: Make you feel like your input matters.

I am thinking that this year, a lot more people spent money they actually had instead of putting on the trusty credit card. It maybe painful in the short term, but far better in the long term.

--Most people are not going to order a large screen TV without seeing the quality of the picture first. You can't do this over the internet. I agree that cable pricing it out of hand, but really only with Monster or other "premium" cables.

2. Open more cash registers. Don't make me wait in line for 20 minutes when it only took me 10 minutes to shop. Move some of the worthless floor people to the register.
--Then don't bitch about prices if you wan them to have more people in the stores.

3. Reward your smart floor people. Go back to the commission model. The guy that's selling appliances should know a thing or two about appliances!
-- A good salesman insn't always the smartest. If you are going to work on commission to reward them, then you're going to have to adjust the costs of the items they sell so you can "reward" them properly.

4. Stop limiting me to Windows Vista computers! Give me XP - or at least the ability to downgrade to XP myself. Consumers aren't so stupid that they'll settle for Vista Home Edition rather than XP Professional when they buy a computer.
-- Talk to Microsoft about it. Though why you want to keep using a 7 year old OS is a little confusing.

5. Put real graphics cards in your computers. Seriously. You have 20 computers to pick from and the only one that can run Vista with the 'super pretty eyecandy' is the $2399 one that people don't even bother to look at because of the price.
--Where are you shopping? I can go to Fry's and find a PC or laptop in any price range and any configuration.

6. Stop treating us consumers like idiots when the only idiots are typically the ones that work in your store. See #1, #3, and #4.
-- 9 times out of 10 it's the consumer that is the idiot.

7. NO MORE MAIL-IN REBATES. (Some stores are already doing this.. kudos.)
-- Once again, this isn't always the retailers thing. Newegg has mail in rebates too. I guess they should fail as well.

--An informed consumer is a smart consumer. Maybe you should do some research on what you want BEFORE you decide to buy it.

9. Stock higher quality merchandise. Yes, higher prices, so what.. I should not be limited to the Internet as the only place to buy a quality blender, tools, applianes, etc..
--Define "higher quality"? The retailer needs to stock items that sell and move quickly. If they stock high end items but only move 1 a week, where as they move 100 of the lower end one, then why make space for something that makes less money?

10. Stop annoying me with the intercom (this applies mostly to up-scale department stores.) I should not have to hear a chime when your phone rings or any other bullshit. Play some elevator music and let me shop in peace.
-- Sounds like you go in to the stores with a chip on your shoulder to begin with. Why not go buy one of those over priced, under spec'ed, crappy mp3 players and listen to that?
They need intercoms to do their jobs.

11. Stock something different than only mainstream crap. You make it so the Internet is required to buy anything out of the ordinary. For example... ceramic chef's knife, windows xp professional oem install, laptop docking port.. this brings me to the next
--Once again, they stock what sell, what they can actually get a hold of and what will make them money.

12. Stock some laptops that are worth a damn! You will not find a good laptop in a store. I repeat.. You will NOT find a good laptop in a store. Real laptops have docking ports, quality builds, and are not shiny!.. and this yet again brings me to the next
--I can find good laptops in stores. I'm using a laptop i bought in a store. It's almost 2 years old now and still runs, never had a problem with it.

13. Stock stuff that a business would consider buying!!! Your laptops are barely stupid consumer grade. And, everything else is too.. You can't buy a commercial coffeemaker at a retailer. You can't buy a copy machine!
--Businesses typically order through a business account and get better pricing for doing so. So you want to be able to buy commercial equipment at a retail location. So since Home Depot sell John Deere mowers, I should also be able to buy a half million dollar combine from Home Depot as well?

14. Be happy to see me! I walk in your store and you make me feel like I don't belong there - whether or not I 'should' be in there. Biggest offender: abercrombie. How about you attempt to make me feel good about myself? Train your salespeople to show me what I should be looking at... and again to the next..
-- Based on our posting of the subject, you probably do not look like an approachable or nice person. Why should they wantto talk to you if you're going to complain or give them crap to begin with? They shouldn't make you feel good about yourself, you should be able to that. They should make you feel good about your purchase.

15. Train your goddamn salespeople! Right now, they're morons. In almost every store, the salespeople are morons. But, that doesn't mean they don't have potential! Maybe it means you did not spend a single bit to train them in whatever they're selling!
--So everyone in every store needs to be an expert in everything that comes through the warehouse door? Do you really know how many things a store carries and how often they can change?
16. Start listening to your customers. I am one. Obviously I care enough about how horrible the shopping experience has become to post about it. Yes, I'm criticizing it - but I'm also offering solutions along with my insults. It's free. Don't complain about it. Instead, make us consumers feel like our input matters...
-- Your input matters, but bitching and whining about it on the internet won't change a damn thing. Actually fill out a customer survey. Many stores provide them and they actually do listen. You may think you are the bee's knee's, but you really are just 1 person in a sea of consumers and the retailers must appeal to the largest audience.
