I really like the Tecra M1 by Toshiba but Acer seems to be every reviewers number 1 pick. I need the long-term, good performing machine. This is my guestimate config

P-M Centrino
1.6 (or 1.4) Ghz
512 MB RAM
14.1" TFT
40 gb 5400rpm HD
CDRW/DVD player
32MB video card (64 if I choose the Acer)
10/100/1000 ethernet
bluetooth, IEEE1394, firewire

A Compaq Evo N160c

I love this small light beaty, had no problems with it since I bought it last christmas on a good deal...
I might buy of those new Centrinos laptops by the end of the year when they get cheaper and more
models have surfaced!!

Sony Vaio R505TS + slimdock w/dvd

P3-850, 256MB, 30GB

Sony might be considered "proprietary" by a lot of people, but it has worked very well for me. It's a great little laptop. Sony's new Centrino laptop sure looks good, but the new powerbooks are well, intriguing, I have to admit. I know I can't believe it either, but my buddy has one and OS X sounds pretty sweet.
