So which games are the NV50 and R520 meant to play???

When the Geforce 6 series and RadeonX series was launched, it was clear what games it would play, namely HL2 and Doom3. These cards are bottlenecked even by the fastest of today's processors...

So whats the point of a new generation coming out in May? There arent too many games more demanding that HL2 and Doom3 coming out this soon. So why would anyone buy NV50 and R520? For a better 3dmark :/ 😕

The next big thing seems to be Unreal Engine 3, and games based on it aren't due until well into 2006. The good news is that the new cards that are paper-launched this year may finally be available by then! 🙂

Yes. THe SLI GF6800U's are the only cards capable of playing it a minimum detail settings if that says anything. The NV50 and R500 are going to be powerhouses.

There were a couple of threads pointing out that both HL2 and Doom3 didn't look quite as good as the pre-release screenshots, which is most likely due to the fact that some of the eye candy was toned down to achieve acceptable fps on current hardware. I would imagine that future games based both on the Doom3 and Source engines may turn out to be even more taxing on the video card than the original games. Honestly, I wouldn't be too worried about software developers coming up with new ways to tax your hardware.

That's definately the case... take the Quake 3 engine for example... compare Quake 3 to Soldier of Fortune II. Pretty significant difference in my opinion.

Should be able to sell about 10 copies than.

just increase polygon count and texture size for any game engine to bring the hardware to it knees.

A little of that will happen plus new effects like HDR and whatever else they have in store. Personally I think increased texture detail is the biggest factor in making games look more realistic.
PS: If they can do this in real-time, thats pretty damn amazing, it looks like a render that took hours.

Pretty impressive for a shaded-triangle puker, I will admit, but hardly looks like a render that took hours...

Games that will be taxing on gpu hardware that I can think of are Age of Empires 3, Oblivion, Quake 4. By the time Unreal Engine 3 comes out, R500 and NV50 will both be where a 9800 Pro stands today.
