BTW your "debit" card is not a line of credit and is not reported as such.

Why are people constantly telling me this? Of course I know this. This is a given. I repeat, I know this. I thought I applied to an entry level card, I didn't know they were going to bother checking my history. I was looking for suggestions on entry cards where they DON'T check your prior credit history, seeing as I have NONE.

Thanks for the tips so far though.

Once my credit score hit 725, I applied for a real card. An American Express Blue Cash. Now it is over 800, and I'm still using it.

is this a thinly veiled brag post?

Everyone pretty much still checks, otherwise people would just open hundreds of $500 limit cards. It is a precaution.

Oh and I don't know if anybody has told you this, but your debit card DOES NOT count towards your credit score.

Well, there's still plenty of people running around with a bunch of small limit cards. They're the ones that caused some of this credit problem we have now, since they charged and charged and charged, but never paid it down. Like the lady I saw, a couple years ago, at the gas station. She had $1.70 worth of stuff she wanted to buy, and wanted to put it on her card. Denied. Try this one. Denied. Try this one, etc, etc, etc. She had a WAD of cards in her purse! She's the kind I'm referring to......or they were stolen!

Oh, yeah, and it's just mean now, pointing out that the OP's debit card doesn't count toward their credit score!! ;)

It's interesting that there is now such a problem getting a credit card - I think this is a good thing. When I started college in the late 90's, students were just thrown various credit card offers.

Anyhow, talk to your parents and see if they will add you as an user. Assuming your parents have a decent credit history, you will likely get a better APR and higher spending limit. Keep in mind that if you screw up and spend too much your parents can be stuck with the bill. Regardless, though, it could be a good way to start off with credit history. Even though your bank rejected you, maybe if you talked to a personal banker there they could recommend a card for you to start building your credit.

Chase are dinks :)

They just closed a card I had with 'them' (formally WAMU) since 2005 because I was using my credit too rapidly (just paid off at $6k balance 5 months ago and now it's at $1500 out of $10k); because I had too many bank cards (yet they just issued me a buy.com card 3 weeks ago) and because I'm over the limit on another card - I have no cards that are over the limit and haven't missed any payments in 5 years.

Capital One is pretty good though they are stingy with increasing limits.
