Not enough accounts opened long enough to establish a credit history.

"

I've had a debit card for nearly 3 years now. Eh? This was from Chase, I believe I applied for one of the smaller cards like the Amazon one. Any advice? This was like the 3rd time I applied for a CC.

Try to get a card from the bank where you have your debit card. If that doesn't work, you may just have to wait until the credit crunch is over.

Or get a cell phone plan in your name (or anything else that you have to pay monthly) as this will help you establish credit

First of all a debit card is not a credit card even though it may look like one. Using one doesnt build credit history! :light:

First of all you might want to consider a secured card whereby you deposit funds that are used insure against default on your part.

and lastly.....

First of all you really should avoid credit cards altogether if you can, otherwise try the secured card idea to build a history. A year from now try again.

Close, but no cigar.

1) Start at the bank where you have the debit card.
2) If they say no go for a secured credit card. There's no need to wait until the credit crunch is over.

I tried to follow A5's advice, but was rejected by my own bank! Oddly enough, my first credit card was the Chase Amazon.com Visa.

Once my credit score hit 725, I applied for a real card. An American Express Blue Cash. Now it is over 800, and I'm still using it.

It is an easy mistake to make, but I bolded the common confusion. Banks want to know that you properly handle CREDIT. A debit card has nothing at all to do with credit.

That said, you'll probably have to play the slow route game as mentioned above. Banks right now really want to get rid of all credit cards since people have stopped paying them. Until the recession is over, it'll be damn hard to get one. You might have to get a secured credit card, get some credit history, then apply for a real credit card.

I got my first CC in 1988 when a saw an application in the lunch room of my local community college. All I needed was a student ID card and I got a $500 credit line. Within 6 years I had $70,000 in revolving credit over several gold cards. Ill skip the "rest of the story".

Yep, being a student is the best way to get a credit card.

Just skip the credit card and consider yourself lucky you don't have to deal with their B.S. interest rates and fees.

what about some bank offer you line of credit as overdraft protection for your checking account, and when you use your card, you can ask them to draw from credit instead of debit. will that help?

Shit, rack up thousands in debt and then tell the bank to pound sand. Isn't that the new American way?

I had trouble applying for a credit card and was denied by my own bank and others as well. I'm going with a secured CC in a few weeks to build credit.

Most people start out with store credit cards to establish a revolving credit history, then you can move to a real credit card later on.

They listed why they turned you down - no revolving credit history/length. So get started on having revolving credit.

You shouldn't have to start with a secured credit card. They have low and mid level credit cards aimed at specific credit score ranges.

Then again, a secured credit card is practically guaranteed acceptance.

how old are you and what's your annual income? and if you can post your social security* maybe someone here can run a credit check and tell you why you're being denied.

*don't do that :)

If he's not careful he might wind of signing up for one of those "its a trap" credit cards if he feels desparate enough. They give you a $200 credit line and charge you $175 fees in 30 days to "get you started". Then, you get to pay that back at 23%! :(

Total ripoff.
