So, where do I go to keep on on the everyday crap?

I noticed as I jump more and more into my degree I have sort of lost touch with any modern day trends, discussions ect (Everyday news that is not political, most sport updates/gossip, other "conversation pieces"). It kind of sucks since it really kills my ability to speak conversationally with anyone outside my discipline, not everyone wants to discuss politics/biology 😉. So any suggestions of reading sources I could read daily to sort of expand and regain my ability to have conversations on "up to the minute" topics?

This sounds kind of pathetic huh 😛

Well it does on the type of porn people are looking at and the best way to fap but there are a few other things it doesn't cover. 🙁

I lately discovered a great new website for conversations: www.Pandalous.com. They have very high quality discussions on every area of life (not much on computers though).
I wouldn't say it is exactly for up to the minute topics as you call them, but for conversations about life and anything you care about. Their moto is Pandalous - think about it, which I like.

From your description it sounds to me exactly what you are looking for. Studying math for a long time I remember what it was to not be able to "speak conversationally" as you put it.
I must say I enjoy talking to people there.

Get some RSS feeds. I have Gizmodo, Engadget, Slickdeals, Fatwallet, Gawker, Kotaku, Digg, Lifehacker, Jalopnik, and a few other sites on my feed list. You'll be in the 'in' crowd in no time! (in)

Fark, Digg or Reddit...get a condensed version of the stories people found popular that day by looking up the most popular

You are by far the first "looks like spam" post that has ever actually helped me

Thanks Richard. Happy it helped

I listen to NPR on the commute for some degree of world awareness, it's without a doubt a skewed perspective, but it is skewed in the direction of the community I live in so I still end up being able to talk to people.

I have a subscription to the new Yorker, which gives me weekly updates of awesomeness. It really is a damn good read on current issues.

You could also read R&R on Craigslist, I suppose....

I like that slight air of superiority over "the newbies" in your post.
