So... when's ATI implementing that FEAR.EXE fix?

Remember around a month ago when an ATI engineer admitted there was a messed up "if" statement related to the FEAR demo such that running the full version of FEAR as FEAR.EXE results in reduced performance than if you rename the .exe file to anything else, such as PHEAR.exe or whatever.exe?

Well I have the 5.11 driverset which he said would not include the fix and I did not see the fix listed for the 5.12s either.

Did 5.12 fix this and just didn't mention it or is it still unfixed?

Here is my test just now in 5.11s with FEAR.EXE versus PHEAR.EXE:

http://users.adelphia.net/~jrockcls/PHEARexe.gif

That's a gain of 4 to the minimum and the maximum fps just by renaming the exe file.

Thats nuts, i'll test tomorrow. Just a quickie tho. Are the cat 5.11's better than the 5.12's in all games? I have shadow issues in battlefield 2 & the water appears strange in lock on. Ive only had my X1800XT a few days.

re-run the tests with the original file as well, a few times
and again a few times with the renamed file

seeing that slight of a performance change can be something else and not that name change. I mean, 4fps to minimum, and your average stays the same? It could easily be normal variance.

I got +10fps back then when I ran it in the original thread.

Meh. Went from 55fps -> 65 fps I think.

Reboot between runs because it could be getting cached.

Try doing PHEAR then FEAR and see what happens.

okay i will try that, but yes it seems like it was proven already a month ago and confirmed by an ATI engineer that there was a bug.

4fps isn't big enough to say there's something wrong.

The new drivers do increase performance with dual-core and HTT machines though, so it'd probably be worth it for many to get the drivers no matter what. I have a P4 with HTT, so I'm installing them tonight. Although... you know I don't really game much anymore :(
