Yeah I know, I'm clueless 😱

I'm going to the Army Recruitment office today, and I have to register for something, but I'm not 100% sure. I don't want to accidentally sign my life to the army 😉

So, do I sign up for the draft? or something else?

Are you asking how to sign up for the army or selective service? Selective service you sign up for when you turn 18, if you don't then you might not be eligable for federal scholarships or jobs etc. All you have to do is go to the post office, pick up a selective service form, and mail it in.
 
You have to sign up for Selective Service (which I believe makes you eligible for a draft). I don't know why you would have to go to the Army recruitment office to sign up because they usually send the forms to your house and I think you can even sign up online now.

You don't have to go to an Army office unless you are actually enlisting. To signup for selective service, which is required by law, go to any post office or just do it online here.

No! The only thing you can do at the recruiter's is enlist...Sign up for the *Selective Service* at the DMV (or with your voting papers)
 
You can also go to the Post Office, that is were I registered when I turned 18.

The draft system is pretty cool (if it can indeed be cool, maybe facinating is more appropriate), the older you get, the less chance you'll have of being drafted.

Ironically enough, even though you have to register at 18 you really wouldn't be drafted until you were 20.

Oh by the way, no college financial aid unless you register.

There hasn't been a draft for some time. Only happens in time of war when they can't get enought folks into the service.
ie, during Vietnam the more traditional draft turned into a lottery b/c prior to that people were going to school just for a student deferment, and being a student, it was argued, wasn't enough reason to not serve. Then on the appointed day a lottery was held and they picked out 365 numbers in random sequence and that's how the order of getting called up for the draft happened for that conflict. (If your birthday the first picked, you would be first to go; if picked last, you'd be last to be called).

Right now the US military is all voluntary, registering for the selective service is just in case the country ever need to start the draft again. You don?t have to sign up if you don?t want to but don?t expect to get the same benefits that people who do get. No body in their right mind wants to see war, but if you?re not willing to protect your country you shouldn?t receive any of the benefits of living here.
 
Go to your local post office and ask about it. They should have your form, and since you seem to have a problem paying attention to what you sign, you won't accidentally sign your life away for a remake of Full Metal Jacket.

Its true that you don't have to register if you don't want to.

You don't need to have a Drivers Licence to drive either, but it is the law.
 
There's a million+ Army Reserve/National guard and I'm guessing the same for every other service.

If they have to reinstate the draft, then the sh*t's hit the fan anyway....
 
As a male service member i am throwing this out... If our current state of affairs is pushing for women in the military doing all the same jobs as the men.. then why don't they push the 18 y.o. women to sign for selective service as well? Don't sling that "you sexist" card at me because i am in a all female dominated profession (granted the military has a 1:3 ratio while the civilian world has a 1:10). If they are good enough to reap all the benefits then they can share the blood shed as well.... right?
 
selective service. some times they usually sent you a card in your mail around your 18th birthday. or you can also register online. i forgot the url, but i know its possible.

Thats what I was thinking when I signed up. So, women are total equals of men, but they dont get drafted. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight ..... :|
 
Selective Service!! Not the draft... oy.

Selective service basically, to my knowledge, sticks you in their database, says, "Yes, I'm 18, I'm a pawn for you" and if times comes for a draft, they send for you.

Obviously not. 😛

I'm on DSL and a 15" screen (as opposed to my normal T1 and 19"), so I'm kind of impatient, didn't want to read the whole way through.

Yeah, I'm lazy. 😀
