So when will we have a *real* DX10 game?

I've been frustrated by the problems I've had with the DX10 mode in the Crysis demo. It really seems like this game is DX9, with some DX10 stuff added in for show.

The problems I've had in DX10:

1. The menus are messed up to the point that I can't start the game with certain monitor configurations (i.e. my HDTV).

2. The game runs slower in DX10 than in DX9 on the same settings (not sure if DX10 mode has better graphics; it looks the same to me on identical settings).

3. I get all kinds of artifacts on the foliage.

4. Some of the foliage appears suddenly then disappears suddenly.

Beyond that it's OK, but really, the game can't be DX10 given all the problems people are having (unless this is all due to driver issues which I suppose could be possible).

So when do we get real DX10 games? Will we ever get them? When is DX11 coming out? DX10 and Vista seem like such a waste.

You're going to have to wait for actual Dx10 engines to be developed, than actual games to be written using those engines. I don't see how all that is going to happen in less than 24 months, and that is being pretty optimistic. You probably have at least another year before we see any native-Dx10 games come out.

SickBeast, are you running the settings on "Very High"?

i see a BIG difference between high and very-high

try running the built-in benchmark demo ... watch the water shaders, the lighting - especially the sky, and the explosions
... change the resolution if you must ... and watch it several times ... it loses a lot of "realism" dropping to high.

Hellgate:London devs claim their DX10 will not only look better than the DX9 mode BUT will also run better on the same [dx10 capable] rig in DX10 mode ... i only got to play the beta - before the improvement - so i can't confirm.

I seem to be follow Apop and echoing his statements... If you have the hardware, it will not dissapoint.

Firstly it's only a demo.....you cannot expect everything to be completely flawless and compare it to final products of 'previous DX9/10 games' that will have to wait until November on release (and likely a few quick patches and drivers later). Secondly I don't think anyone is going to see a magical DX10 game that looks a million times better than everything else and runs at 300fps @ 1920x1200 with this current generation of graphics hardware. There is going to be a performance difference and it will hurt when the settings are cranked up and that will likely remain universal for a while to come.

when there are more people running Vista than XP, currently the stats on steampowered are ~90% running XP and 8% running Vista, so it will take a long time.

Call of Juarez is one such title; the difference in IQ there is massive.

Crysis' very high settings can pretty much be replicated under XP with a little config tweaking.

Well, Nvidia has proved to MS that Vista is not really necessary for DX10. I was reading in this months PC Format how Nvidia is considering taking MS to task saying they are holding back making DX10 for Xp just to sell Vista (no kidding) Too bad no one will go against MS.

If you're mad about DX10, blame MS. They're the ones that gimped that horse at the gate to sell their OS. Developers can't afford to go whole hog on DX10 since the vast majority of their potential customers won't have access to it. The transition is always slow, but having an OS upgrade as well will slow it down even further.
