So when will Video Cards and Monotors sport HDMI ports?

Been out of the loop for a while, but last time I checked DVI was the standard video port on all good cards...

When (if ever) will HDMI be standard?

Considering how we have Display Port on the way, likely never.

HDMI has made its way to quite a few LCDs & video cards though (all the 2400s, 2600s, 2900s if you count their included adaptors).

i dont really think display port will get that much traction at first. hdmi is "already there" and a lot of cards come with dvi to hdmi adapters now. hdmi even has taken a while to gain a foothold and the fact that hdmi is on every single tv, and that computers ar emoving to more living room type use, who knows if display port will even be that widely adopted.

hdmi i think because you can easily use adapters is fine. dvi honestly is fine, just it doesnt carry audio... and really do you really care that your monitor cable has audio.

the main advantage i can see, that isnt that huge an advantage is displayport can do 2560x1600 on the same connector.

hdmi has something called hdmi type B which is a different type of connector... but i wouldnt be surprised to see 30" monitors in the future having this type B connector and dvi to hdmi type b adapters (type b is electrically compatible with dual link dvi).

display port is not compatible at all with dvi... so i'd say thats a huge problem for it. i think the only real reason that you dont just get hdmi on the cards themselves yet, is that most monitors still dont have it. they do make adapters. plus there is likely a license fee for actually sticking the port on EVERY card (which most people wont use).

if they just make dvi to hdmi adapters available then they dont have to make all these cards that cost an extra 50 cents for no reason.

Hmm... This is going to sound very elementary but...

I'm planning to run a DVI cable from my PC vid card to an Onkyo Rx with video swiching. HDMI out of the Rx will be supplied to the 8ft wide PJ screen of my Home Theater. I'd like to get sound out as well. I'm guessing all I need to do is run audio cable from my Audigy card in the PC to the Rx as just another sound source input. The cable run for this will have to be approx 25". Is PC sound from a card able to be carried this distance for amplification through an Rx without issue? Is it even possible? Thanks for help.

I hope never.
HDMI ports are way too fragile and easily become disconnected.
I like something like the current ports that have a screw I can secure the connector with and that doesn't bend pins if inserted wrong.

Displayport has very strong support, so DVI will likely be phased out in a year. Expect HDMI + DP to be the most common then.

Agreed, HDMI doesn't really give you anything extra on the PC as it still has the same bandwidth limitations of DVI. Resolution is only going to increase over time, so we might as well start migrating now.

well display port doesnt really give you anythiing over dvi either.

display port, hdmi type B and dvi dual link are more or less the same video wise.

i honestly am not a display port fan and hope it never takes off.

diisplay port adds dcdp which is even higher bit encryption 128bit compared to hdcp. it adds audio which hdmi already has, and the bandwidth is the same as hdmi Type B. and to top it off it has more or less the same problems with the port as HDMI And is not electrically compatible with dvi.

display port seems like a horrible idea. I thinkt he best part about it really is that it supports fiber optica cables so you could make really long cable runs.

and yeah 25 feet for audio is probably fine. you probably want a cable with some decent shielding though not one of those super thing cheap cables.

I think Display Port will take off. From what I have HDMI has heavy licensing fees while Display Port is suppose to be cheap...

i thinkt hat is why there is such heavy industry support for it , but hdmi has had a huge lead and is already in everything.

i think wireless usb was formed for this same reason and we dont see it anywhere.

How's it going Cave. Seems you got lost in the shuffle. You mean 25 Feet correct? I've done 30' runs before and it works fine and as far as I know there are no limitations.

25' is nuthin. Analog or digital? Coaxial is good for either and RG-59 is fine but RG-6 can be used for all applications (including video & RF) so is more flexible that way though the construction itself may be less flexible, especially for the lower-cost variety. If analog, I would avoid the simple stranded wire audio cables and for adapting to the mini jacks try to use cable-less splitters, space permitting.

DP is not comparable to HDMI as it replaces all PC video interconnects (both internal and external) so will both simplify and lower costs (and remains royalty-free). Alas, HDMI is already firmly entrenched in consumer electronics so expect to continue having to adapt PC to HT.
