So when someone asks where are you from? Do you respond with....

Where I grew up, which happens to be where I spent most of my life. I was born in a city named Rotorua but moved to Tauranga at age 5. Lived there until age 21 and I call it home.

Edit - poll sucks, neither answer is correct unless I'm overseas, in which case both answers are correct.

Edit 2 - stop changing shit! :|

I've debated this question many times as I have moved around quite a bit. The longest I have lived in 1 state/area is 8 years and it is the first 8 years of my life so that is where I am from.

I love your polls... so one sided. :-/

I give it all very quickly. "Born in Germany, moved to Oregon when I was 6 months old. Lived in Douglas County until I was 18." That's about what I say. It's more fun than, "I are from hippy land"

i respond with "san diego".

if it's people from outside the US, i respond with "california".

if they dont understand..fuck them.

depends. I've lived the first half of my life in china, and half of it in Canada. if somebody from Canada asks me, I'll probably say China, but for others, I'll say Canada.

Hippies and yuppies are not the same.

I'm from Tacoma, WA, and it depends on the context. A few scenarios I've run into most often:
1) American. I usually start with Tacoma, if I see a blank expression I mention its right near Seattle.
2) European. I usually say Seattle, will follow with 'near Vancouver' if I expect they didn't understand.
3) Other Foreigner. If they seem educated I start with Seattle, follow with America if they don't seem to understand.
4) Other Foreigner. If they don't seem educated I just say America.

edit: in East Asia, I start not with "Seattle" but with "see-a-toll" and that makes the difference. They always understand.

depends on context.

If they are wondering where I grew up/am from. I tell them that, If they're wondering where I live then that is the answer they receive. It's usually pretty obvious which one people are wondering about.

Born in Worcester, MA, and even though I only lived there until I was 4, I don't identify much with FL, which is where I've spent most of my life.

I usually answer Boston, because people can't figure out Worcester, and if they go "OK, well where are you from originally," I say Palestine.

i say "i was born in India, but i grew up in Maryland"

Hey! That's exactly what I say, too. I don't even know why, nobody's fooled . . . after all, I don't look like I grew up in Maryland.

Well, I just left your mom's place...

I've lived in so many dammed places that for much of my life I never had one place that I identified with as "home," but I've been in Kahleeforneeya so long that, like it or not, I'm now a Kahleeforneeyan...I just rarely admit to being "from" Modesto...😛

depends... if it is someone that knows the local towns i will say which town i'm from... otherwise i just say i'm from "near Windsor" even though i live 30 mins away

My parents did not have the good sense to escape from DC until 6 weeks after I was born but I have spent my entire conscious existence in Virginia which is where I say I am from.

Depends on who is asking and how the question is worded. If they ask me where I grew up I tell them one thing, if they ask me where I was born I tell them another thing, and if they ask me where I am from it's where I currently reside.

Is this question supposed to be directed at people on this forum with an Asian background or something?
