So when are we going to build a base on the moon?

Or lunar port of some kind? Maybe I am just a bit impatient, but I would like to see it sometime in my life. Hell, why not colonize the moon while we are at it?

I don't know, but I find it sadly amusing that we currently have
the technological capabilities to send people to any planet in
this solar system and perhaps beyond, but won't, and won't for at
least several decades because of our artificial dependence on money.

uh... probably because no one would want to live on the moon and the cost to get sh!t up there would greatly outweigh the value of having those products.

If it's one thing that my economics class taught me, it was that we're not going to live on the moon.

Besides... how would you go to the movies? How would you go clubbing? All the cool people would stay in LA, NY, FL, Cornelius, etc.

The economics will probably make sense this century. I think there is still some development needed on the long term effects of reduced gravity on humans. Maybe a good gravity generator would solve some of the medical problems...

unfortunately the only kind of thing that would create gravity would be a centrifuge. Or else something very very very dense to create the gravity. But the problem would be getting it there, because to get something to simulate earth gravity, it would take the entire mass of the earth.

I don't think that we should even think of doing this until we get somethings on this planet fixed first........ like:

1. Poverty.
2. Hunger.
3. Pollution.
4. Debt Levels in all countries.
5. Exploitation of Women and Children.
and the list is endless.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see humans colonizing space, heck I'd like to actually travel in space ;) But I think that the timing and economics are not right :(

Cheers,

We will never fix all of those things, and we never will try too.

What will happen is some country (most likly the USA) will blow up all the other countries. they would spare us canadians cause we are right beside you, and there is no way you could safely detonate a bomb so close to yourselves.

The USA will just take Canada as its own, and will use up every last resource before they have to move to a new planet for the species to survive. The people left on earth will slowly turn into mutants from all of the changes from the nuclear blasts.

Man, your crazy. Obviously you dont seem to know what sarcasm is.

Besides, whats wrong with saying the most powerful country could blow up the world. Its true.

uh... the answer would be yes, I'm very familiar with sarcasm.

And, if we were all freaking jack-offs like SOME people, then yes we might build the arsenal to do so. But for right now, we're only concerned with blowing up Canadians (ay) and Jerry Lewis fans.

Regarding those problems, if we could do it cost effectively, we would go regardless of all those problems. I would think that Mars would be a better choice because there's a chance of water there already?

But the distance is great. We could more quickly go to the moon. We can also learn to deal with problems and apply it to when we do decide to go to mars. But I think a lunar base to launch a mars mission would be a good idea. No weather to interfere, and a shorter distance.

Living on the moon would be kewl. Damn it...it's our destiny...I know, I've seen it on Star Trek ;) But, seriously, too many people want it for it to never happen. If the government doesn't do it, then private industry will do it. All they need is to get the costs down, build a new and more efficient "space-ship," and stuff like that. Face it, humans are by nature curious and explorers, it's bound to happen. If it happens soon, I don't know...trying to tell the future is not a perfect job.. As far as what Cobalt said...whooooooa there lil' Cobalt....that's pushing a bit far, isn't it? The guy's just joking around w/ a sci-fi type armageddon and you go postal... He even said the U.S. would spare the Canadians...geeeez :)

Adul... much less gravity to overcome relative to launching from Earth as well. Less fuel, less cost. A moon station first makes more sense, to me.
