Hello all, i just upgraded to a 1080p display so im going to upgrade my GPU. So how long till we see the non ref 4890's for sale? that ASUS one with the better power circuit looks sweet but i cant find it for sale anywhere.

A: wait for non ref card

B: Pull trigger now and buy a AC Accelero TWIN TURBO or other aftermarket cooler.
 
My wild guess predicts we'll hear more about them tomorrow 😉 Shhhhh shhh though 😛

Oh, and the Asus one, is still a 'reference' HD 4890. What you should be waiting for are the HD 4890's from Sapphire, MSI, that run at 1GHz.

Oh, OK. I dont know, if they are putting a water block on the 900mhz card posted in this thread, I dont forsee too many 1ghz on air.

I do. In fact, I'm pretty sure they are coming. Also, I had no problem running the reference HD 4890 at 975MHz. Air will suffice, especially with better coolers then stock.

I do. XFX and Sapphire already have them in the works. Sapphire is using a 4&8 pin power cables so that extra power helps the speeds. I don't know how XFX is doing it yet but 1GHz isn't that hard.

They're not saying exactly when 1 ghz card will hit the market, but they're counting the time into "couple of weeks".

I for one, wouldn't get a non reference 4890, because I bet that it will cost way more then the original 4890. I'd grab the cheapest 4890 out there. I've seen the Powercolor model being very, very cheap, bumping into 4870 1gb price territory.

 
The reference cooler nearly always does better memory cooling than non-ref, and turning up the fan speed will keep your core temps chilly. So in my opinion, your better off with the reference cooler.
 
The only problem with the ref cooler is i dont like the noise level, i dont know about the 4890 but with my 4830 its the loudest thing in my case when it spins up to 70% or more, and i have alot of other fans(7) and its louder than all of them combined. If i went with a ref card i would upgrade the cooler to something with a quiet fan.
 
Link to your Sapphire? I'm pretty sure HD4890 comes with a much, much better and probably quieter cooler than the 4830.

And I have the same CPU cooler as you, and actually when it spins up it is the loudest thing in my case. But I usually don't hear it over the game sounds coming out of my case.
 
The cooler on the 4890s is differnt than the 4830 but looks like the same size fan(45-55mm), i would want to replace it with a 120mm fan on a aftermarket cooler as at least then you can have high CFM fan with low noise, small fans spinning at 4500+ rpm sound really loud, and a 120mm fan going at only 1000rpm can move as much or more air and be whisper quiet. Also i dont notice the sound of the AC freezer pro fan but i also have4 120mm fans 1 140mm fan and the 80mm on the PSU. I do however still want to get a CPU cooler with a 120mm fan.
