What configuration are you all going to come up with. Ram, psu, video card, mobo (unreleased yet?), conroe, and any extras (30 inch dell lcd...)

I'm thinking about going with the 2.4 ghz one and overclocking it once I find some good ram.

the cheapest Dell system (likely a mid-grade) to use the Conroe Core2Duo. The lower-end machines will likely be solos.

Why Dell? Financing and a possible price break from ISP.

Smallest HDD and RAM I can get, but I'll load it with (3rd party) RAM and video if I can swing it.

Hmm...
E6600
Some unspecified Intel motherboard (hopefully they'll have a P965 board with ICH8R)
2 gigs DDR2 667/800 from somebody
Still unsure on the case and PS
Seagate 7200.10 320 giggers
Some random 16X DVD burner
Dell 2007FP (already bought, waiting for my replacement for banding issue)
SoundBlaster X-Fi (not sure which model)
Logitech X-5300e (bought this week)

Am I forgetting anything?

[edit: forgot the video card... either 7900GT or GTX, probably eVGA...)

Which ISP and what kind of price break? It's a shame they won't help you build your own computer :(, but pretty awesome that they offer one at all, depending on how much they're giving back.

To the OP: The only things I have so far are:
20.1" Viewsonic vx2025wm for $250 off of craigslist
160gb 10k rpm hdd from Dell (rebranded Raptor) for $160
320gb 7200.10 Seagate hdd for $90 after a $25 rebate (bundled with a low-end dlink wifi router)
2x1gb OCZ platinum edition pc6400 ram for $163 after $50 rebate
Logitech g7 mouse for $55 off of ebay
Logitech s510 wireless keyboard/mouse for $15 after $40 in rebates and $10 coupon

Case and PSU will be determined by what medium-high quality components go on sale between now and release. Then on the release date, I'm going to get an E6600 and copy whatever mobo people are digging on various message boards that costs around $150. What I spend on a video card is still up in the air.

This will be my 1st system overhaul in 4 years. I'm gonna build a video editing system. It'll look something like -

E6600
2GB DDR2 800
7600GT
Asus CoreDuo2 mobo
Fortron 450W PSU
SATA2 HD that's on sale
Possible Dell 20" LCD

my new rig in over 3 years...cant wait to upgrade. and for some reason, i always love displaying what i will get in the future...dunno why though.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 overclocked to whatever
Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo (975x)
2x1GB (2GB) of G.Skill DDR2-800 Dual-Channel RAM (4-4-4-12) - 4-4-4-5 timings kit is extremely expensive
eVGA Geforce 7900GTX 512MB
Western Digital Raptor 74GB SATA 16MB cache version (this asus mobo only allows for 1 ide channel/2 ide devices and those will be my optical drives so i have to get a sata drive)
Dell 2007FPW/2407FPW if i can possiblly gather enough money AFTER buying the components

total should come to around $1500 without any monitor.

im reusing the case, psu, optical drives (dvd-rw and cd-rw), keyboard/mouse, speakers, and my seagate 7200.9 300GB SATA hard drive.

My Conroe rig will be either a SFF (Shuttle) or Micro ATX (Qpack). Waiting to see the benchies between the 2MB/4MB chips, then will decide which one to drop some $ on. Looking to spend 1k.

q3 2006--
Intel Core 2 Duo / Extreme (Conroe) desktop CPU is expected to be released in July 23rd on a 65nm process. Conroe is a dual core CPU based around the Merom architecture but optimised for the desktop market by removing some of the power constraints from Merom in order to increase performance. Like Merom, Conroe will feature a 14-stage pipeline and will be a 4-issue core. Conroe will additionally feature SSE4 support, virtualization capabilities, LaGrande technology and 64-bit capability in addition to EDB, EIST and iAMT2. The standard edition CPUs will feature a 1066Mhz FSB speed, with the initial members of family being as follows:

E6300 (1.86GHz), $183
E6400 (2.13GHz), $224
E6600 (2.4GHz), $316
E6700 (2.67GHz), $530
X6800 (2.93GHz), $999
E4200 (2.66GHz, 800Mhz FSB), $?

Preliminary benchmarks show that the top of the range Core 2 Extreme 6800 outperforms an AMD FX-62 by 17.5-26% in Office benchmarks, 15-25% in gaming benchmarks and around 25-30% in Media Encoding tests.

quarter 4 2006---
Intel Conroe E6900 (3.2GHz) is expected to be released in Q4.

quarter 1 2007 --
Intel Kentsfield desktop CPU is expected to be released in Q1 2007. Kentsfield is expected to be a quad core CPU contained in a multi-chip package (i.e. 2 Dual Core CPUs in a single package). Kentsfield is expected to feature 4MB of L2 cache.

From what I have read and been told there will be no 4MB cache until the kentsfield is released in 2007....

Here we go--hope to have all this together in September:

Same old case
Enermax EG565AX-VE FMA 2.0
2.4 Ghz Conroe (and hopefully overclock the crap out of it)
ASUS 965 Based Chipset (P5B Deluxe)
I don't know what video card yet--ATI something?
150GB Raptor x2 in RAID0 (already using)
400GB Seagate SATA (already using)
300GB Backup HD (cheap SATA drive)
2 Gig DDR2-800

I am a little pissed that the new DX10 cards are not going to be out for a while. I wanted to wait but again haven't upgrading my CPU in over three years now. I would like to continue using my current ATI X800XT PE but of course this is AGP--so I might get something cheap in the interim.

Also, what do you gusy recommend for a good heatsick and fan combo? From what I have read, the current crop of LGA 775 heatsinks will fit. Any good reviews? I looked into watercooling, bu the price of entry is a bit steep.

I decided to go with SFF rig because it's smaller and give a lot more space in my room in a new house which I will move in late August.

Case: Black Qmicra
PSU: Seasonic S12 500watts
Motherboard: Asus P5B-VM
CPU: E6600
HD: Western Digital 250GB
RAM: GSKILL PC6400 2GB RAM
Video Card: X1900XT 512MB
Monitor: Dell 2007WFP

Should be around $1500-$1800

I will upgrade when Vista is released, and hopefully Intel will have their quad core CPU out. Sooo, I'm thinking Q1-07 timeframe.

The X6800, E6700, and E6600 are all coming with 4MB of L2 cache. All 3 are coming out from the onset aren't they?

personally i will wait and not be an early adopter. wait for m/b bioses to get worked out, make sure the m/bs actually support the conroe, wait for ddr2 800 or faster to come down in price, etc. i am just going to probably pick up a 3800 x2 at the end of july, o/c it to ~ 2.4 and may actually sit this upgrade out, but who knows.....

and i will scavenge the fs/ft forum for excellent prices on ddr :D

Since I was an early adopter with the Athlon X2's, I don't really need to replace my desktop system yet. However, my server that currently has an 800MHz Duron in it has very limited I/O, and as I'll need to expand the storage capacity, a Core 2 Duo would be a great CPU to base the upgrade on... Not to mention that it would work very well in Folding@Home also. ;)

I've already got the best 939 mobo that exists (a8n32-sli deluxe), might as well keep it for a while longer. I think i'll just up my opty 144 to a dualie when the prices drop the day after conroe.

Assuming my new job goes well:

Conroe 2.67 500 dollar CPU (IF it oc's much better than the 2.4ghz one) hopefuly too 3.5-4ghz
ATI DFI XFire Board (assuming its good)
Nice watercooling
2x1gb good quality memory
New PSU for X1900XTXCrossfire on watercooling @ ~ 750/1800+ or r580+ if it's much better than XTX.

The rest I'll probably keep for awhile, Antec P180 case, X-Fi, Z-680s, 2005FPW (maybe keep, maybe go 24 inch) 2x74 raptors (may get 2 more for real RAID but have to research it), etcetra

Hopefully I can sell my Mobo/Ram/CPU for a combined total of 400 bucks, which will make the total expenditure for Conroe setup about 1500 dollars, which is kind of expensive now that I think about it but possibly still doable :)
