A lot to do with the history, especially in the late 80s. Back then, it was common for a Mac II system to cost $5-$6k average price. At that time, Apple could get away with charging such outrageous prices because their Mac's had better intuitive software, with hardware spec being a little superior to the PC camp. Many of us grew our animosity towards Mac users (most of which whom Daddy bought for them). However, the tables turned long ago, PCs have superior software and hardware, yet Apple still charges ridiculous prices (albeit, not quite as ridiculous as long ago).

you hit the nail right on the head. my company (media industry), has a mac dept with their own helpdesk, and we hate each other (not really but you know what i mean). we've just finished a large PO of the corporate lan consisting of macs and pcs - and the price difference was ridiculous. our new workstations just tear the macs a new one in terms of computing.

the IT director is process of attempting to kill off all macs, saying this will be the last batch of macs we will buy. i seriously think he's just kidding ;)

amazingly slow? awesome!!
if you could use OS/X on a PC that would be cool perhaps... but you can't.. so, macs still suck.

Uh....? Since when has bloated ass XP ever beaten a UNIX based OS in raw speed?
I've used Linux (Slackware) on my PC's at home and they're not nearly as fast as Windows. and Mac OS (despite being on a SLOW MAC) was slow as well.

because PC's are faster, cost less, less cute, do more, and do it with a lot less effort (effort that woulda been spent reading thru some manual to figure out how to do something. what macs can actually do they do it simpler, but if you want to do something Mac didn't have in mind when writing the OS, good freakin luck...), they're less common (so much less support around).... look I'm not gonna tell you a PC is a superior machine, it's just that the majority of us have used a system our whole loves, paid certain prices for performance, learned how to do all these things....

and then my mac friend (notice no S. I only have one, the rest of ex-mac heads have since turned PC) comes in and tells me how much better his machine is -- his machine that costs more, does less (what little he even wants to do. he has problems burning a CD, configuring games/software is entirely beyond him), does it slower, and he has to search a TON more than I do to find stuff he wants (want the latest software on mac? hah wait 2 years and pay 2x as much...).

that is why.

So what's there to like? Absolutely nothing.

If you play games, I understand.

But OS X and it's unix base kick the crap out of Win2K (and I love Win2K/XP).

I have used both a Mac G4(at work) and PC's(everywere else)

main reasons why people and I dont like macs

1) cost way more, a top of line pc can be built for ~$1700-2000, a mac ~$3000+
2) cant build/customize in the truest sense like we do a PC
3) no matter what you say a P4/Athlon XP is faster
4) Games, are mostly all made for PC, only some games come to Mac

I am not saying Mac's suck, i am just saying these are some of the reasons people prefer PC's

Raw speed? Who gives a crap about "raw speed"? All I know is that a Cyrix PR233 with 64mb of RAM with XP will beat a 500mhz G3 192mb with X in web surfing and office tasks easily. Before I get criticized for making that statement, I use the two configs compared almost daily. You're the only one in this thread sounding like you have never used a Mac...

If you would use one for a week instead of spouting off with some used-up arguments, I guarantee you that you would think otherwise.
Been there, done that. Almost no good games for it, too.

Windows 2000. Never crashes, thanks to the NT kernel.

No one has any real reason, it's just ignorance on the part of people who have difficulty thinking for themselves and forming thier own opinions.
Or maybe its the informed opinion of those that have been forced to use Macs frequently for years, first having to put up with the unstable POS that was Mac OS 8 and 9, then switching to OS X that runs like crap on any Mac older than one or two years...while you can buy a great PC for everything but gaming under $300.

Its more the Mac defenders that are uninformed, happily running X on their new 1-2k Macs and unaware that Apple first makes you pay a ridiculous premium for the machine and then makes it obselete in just a few years.

I'll try to give a new perspective on the whole thing:

I love Macs. I love OS X. I love the Aqua theme. I love the way the Powermac opens so that you can quickly access all the PCI, AGP, and ram slots very, very easily. I love iTunes. I love the iPod. I love Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. I love the Mac's dedication to video and music and photos.

I hate Apple. I hate how they've been making me wait for a replacement for the G4 for like 2 years. I hate how their fastest processor is running at 1.42ghz. I hate that I am constantly worried that they're going to go out of business. I hate that they charge $2000 for a Dual 1.25ghz Powermac. And I hate that they have a version of OS X that runs on x86 hardware actually running in Cupertino that I will never see.

*sigh*....

I use my iMac for iTunes, web surfing, and email, and watching the occasional DVD. For that, it's outstanding, and i absolutely love the quality of the LCD display, and the fact that it's movable. The look and feel of the OS is a hell of a lot more pleasant that Windows, and on this machine I'm not terribly concerned about speed (bandwidth is a much, much larger factor in my day to day computing experience).

Hey,
Here's my thought on macs (yes, I own both a pc and a mac and use both 24/7 - let's say that my electrical bills are very high)... While I think that their hardware is VERY over priced, I have to say that my dual 1 ghz mac is as responsive and as "fast" as my 3 ghz Intel rig.. In other words, while they are behind in the technology race, the software is written specifically for the first party equipment... It's very hard to explain but MP3 encoding on the mac is faster than on my pc- ditto with video encoding.. The heavy OS optimization and incredibly user friendly OS make apple my preferred choice for day to day browsing and media related stuff (I LOVE itunes).. Also, mac's memory management is aweomse - I can run like 6 applications in the background without any slowdowns... PCs obviously win the hardware race but microsoft really should be working closer with hardware manufacturers to make sure that their latest OS works with "ancient" 5 month old computers.. I find it terribly annoying that I'm expected to double my ram every time a new windows OS comes out... That being said, my PC is my baby and I love the thing.. My PC is more of a hobby.. I game on it, use P2P clients, burn dvds, etc. etc.. My mac is always there though, even when I overclocked my pc to much and fried the motherboard...

They are a expensive hassle to build and gaming on macs is practically nonexistent. Those two reasons alone will keep a lot of enthusiast types from using macs.

working side by side with pcs and macs at work, i can honestly say macs has publishing and video editing software going for them. frankly, if it wasn't for adobe, quark express, and final cut pro, our mac users would be long gone.

we're constantly prolonging apple's dying existance with these three software ;)

j/k - i  macs too :p

All kidding aside. I have the same feeling for Macs and PCs as I do about video game consoles. I don't care who it's made by I just want a decent game. Which you are much more likely to get on a PC, since only a portion of gaming software actually are ported to the Mac.

i think mac would die off without osx ...or the pretty design. OSX is the only reason why i got my powermac

i had to use & to develop software for the mac for 3 years &
hated every minute of it.

my complaints:
too expensive
smaller selection of off-the-shelf & shareware software
harder to get support
lower performance for same price
o.s. crashes (not that XP pro is much better)
vastly inferior (for the time) software development environments

Once again, your ignorance becomes appearant. Linux runs off a desktop like KDE - KDE is based upon a client/server dekstop envirnonment, which allows for multiple concurrent users.

Apple rewrote a BSD-based desktop into what is called Aqua.

I use to hate mac... based on judgement of macs i used back in 1995 @ school :).They are expensive and they lack video game support... oh and upgradabilty.

but recently my friend got a powermac... I thought he was insane but i gave it a whirl... all i can say is OSX is a great!! :) Although I sitll think macs arent up to par with the pc, i have respect over the apple is its wonderful OS.
