So what's the take on the Nintendo DS?

I saw a few screenshots (Game Informer mag) of a handful of DS games and I was disappointed. I was hoping for more in the graphics department but from what I could tell there was'nt much improvement over the GBA. Maybe it appeared that way because I saw the screens in a magazine.

So whats the take on the DS? Is it really an improvement over the GBA?

got mine on me now, 93 stars so far with mario 64. its fun, plus people have already tunneled the DS making it playable through a wireless router with people around the world.

<-waiting on a goldeneye port! and the mario mini games cure boredom AND put money in my pockets from friends who are willing to bet a dollar or two for a mini game:beer:

Would there be any legal conflict in making a Goldeneye port for the DS, since Microsoft owns Rare?

Yeah, its pretty much a portable N64.

The graphics aren't the greatest (in fact I don't think Mario 64 looks as good as it did originally), but they're still decent.

I wish that they'd use the extra processing power to make better side-scrolling games like Symphony of the Night on the PSOne. Metroid is the main series that I wished would have gone this route. I like the 3D metroids, but I like the 2D ones just as much, and would prefer for them to stay that way for the time being.

You can't really put too much power in a handheld at the moment though as the battery life just isn't there. This is the problem with the PSP. They said about 6 hours for games, but then admitted that it would get that on a simple puzzle game with the brightness/backlight dimmed, and that a graphically intensive game would eat much more battery life. I think that the Ridge Racer game was causing the battery life to go as low as 3 hours.

Definitely shy on games, I think they mostly didn't want to miss the holiday season for releasing the hardware. Kids both got one for Christmas, they are a hit.

I was planning on buying the DS until I actually saw and played with one at Best Buy. The low resolution of the screen was extremely disappointing as was the overly simple design of the DS itself. With that said I will probably end up buying one later on as more games and linux projects pop up.

Graphics don't make games

I got one pretty much for mario. The future looks very bright. There are many games coming out next year I will want for it.

I thought the N64 was a wonderful system.

Mario
Zelda
Pilot Wings
Blast Corps
Mario Kart
Donkey Kong

Did not like playstation much. Only got it for Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and Chrono Cross.

Remember Nintendo DS is not a Gameboy replacement. That will come later.

Lucky me I got one today.

Um, going from 2d to 3d graphics a bit more powerful than what the N64 could deliver in a handheld? Two screens too. It's quite different.

Graphics are not the most important thing anyhow, but it looks nice to me for a handheld.

Now I've just got to return this Spiderman game and grab Mario 64. I hope I get a chance to try the multiplayer sometime, maybe when I'm back at school.

EDIT:
people have already tunneled the DS making it playable through a wireless router with people around the world.

Nice... I'll have to look into that. Links? Guess I'll google search.

i got one (i just couldnt pass up $160 for the system w/ mario!) when i wasnt even thinking of getting one and i dont really regret it now. I bought "Feel the Magic" too and it really shows how much potential there is for the touchscreen and whatnot.

The only thing negative I can say about it is that there is a lack of games now. There will be a number of great titles coming out in Feb/Mar like Sonic DS, Warioware Touched, and Goldeneye.

Oh and for you RPG guys, FFIII is in development 🙂

How is the DS not a gameboy replacement??

I played one at "Target" and I thought it was pretty fun... took me a bit to get used to the controls and 2 screens, but overall it seemed like a pretty fun thing to have... too expensive for my taste though :/

I looked at two of the groups. There was one posted on slashdot recently: Nitro Online. They seem like a bunch of 12 year olds with little grasp of programming. The other one seems to have some concept and some released products: Xlink Kai. I think they have already made some progress.
