ATi =

X1800XT > X1800XL > X850XT PE > X850 Pro > X800XT PE, etc...

(btw i have no idea, i'm just making this part up)

Nvidia =

7800GTX 512 > 7800GTX > 7800GT > 6800U > 6800GT, etc..

and then both together:

???????????????

????????????????/

That is pretty much true.

where can we purchase these puppies?

it seems you need to sacrifice a few virgins and then sell your arm, leg, kidney and eye to actually get one. in other words, probably ebay a few months down the road.

LOL, in a few months when they will likely be overshadowed by r580/g71? :p

But some people will still purchase the older, slower Nv card just to try it out :p

Cookie, you forget the single 512GTX. Only card I feel bad about forgeting is the 6800GS.

Sad bit is you never going to see it hit retail as asus just developed it for purpose of what the company was capable of was and it was only for reviewers and also the 7800GTX 512MB which will be discontinued by this month. Nvidia and ATI will are getting ready for the next round R580 vs G71 . I bet you Nvidia would start product late dec so they can have it in stock worldwide in all major retail for mid jan. ATI on the other hand "I DON'T KNOW WHat they will DO" but the launch is supposedly 19th Jan for ATI R580.

Maybe you should also state that the X800 GTO2 is only in that performance level if you unlocked and overclock the core/memory to that speed?

This is correct. I really probably shouldn't have included it at all, but since I did I placed it there because out of all the available cards, it probably has the best chance of vastly outperforming its stock numbers.

IIRC

X850XT > X800XT PE > X850XT ~ 6800U

The X850Pro is at the level of the 6800GT~X800XL

Isn't the 6600GT better than the 6800NU?

Most of this is from memory so correct me if I am wrong.

@ 1024x768 with more than a few games yes it is, but once past that resolution and with AA-AF the 6800NU takes over usually. But the 6600GT is extremely formidable when using 1024x768 it keeps up with many high end cards.

Sorry to have to correct you, but it would be close to IMPOSSIBLE for the 6600GT to be faster than the 6800NU.

AGP: ~same fillrate, but NU has much higher memory bandwidth, and more vertex processors on NU (5vs 3)

PCI: ~same fillrate and memory bandwidth, but more vertex processors on NU.

The 6600GT and 6800NU are based on the same core design, the 6800NU has an edge in vertex processors in both flavors, in memory bandwidth in AGP, and is equal in fillrate. These are the things that define a video card for the most part, and there is no way a 6600GT can win.

When you throw in that the AGP 6800NUs have a chance to unlock to 16X6 cards, they are CLEARLY the better choice.

BTW, I have a AGP 6800NU, two PCIE 6600GTs, and used to have two 6800NU PCIEs, have benched all extensively, and know of what I speak.

Over in GH, there is a discussion on the new Dual 7800 SLI cards reviewed at Tom's. Kicks the regular 7800 GTX SLIs butt also. At least they are keeping it in the family (nVidia).

There are some limited scenarios where the 6600 GT can win as it has slightly higher Pixel Shader fillrate, 4GP vs 3.9 GP of the 6800 NU. These are mostly when no AA and AF are applied and lmiited to 1024x768. Were talking stock clocks and no modding to either card here.

Vertex Shader power doesn't really have a large impact on performance outside of the 3D Mark Series of Benchmarks to my knowledge.

Take a look here:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/games-2005_16.html

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/games-2005_17.html

Geforce 6800 1024x768 no AA & AF 91.7FPS

Geforce 6600 GT 1024x768 no AA & AF 94.7 FPS

The 6800 Vanilla pulls away a little at 1024x768 AA & AF and 1600x1200 however.

However, as higher and higher complexity games are produced you will see less and less situations where the 6600 GT can beat the 6800 NU. Since memory bandwidth starts to play a role even in the pure speed modes.
