So what's the "in" DivX DVD Player to get now?

After 100s of hours of reliable DivX playback, my DVP642 finally crapped out. Should I just get another one (same?) or is there a popular one nowadays?

How long did your last you in months or years? I have one that still works fine but it doesn't get used much.

i will still burn xvid's from my HTPC, but that's because I will make season compilations, and to free up hard disk space. its a 160gb in the HTPC, sure I could upgrade it, but more than one disk is also definitly a no-no.

I bought the Phillips DVP5140/37 at Walmart a couple months ago for $55. Similar features as the 642, but a redesign and they upgraded the video DAC (12 bit/108 MHz vs. 10 bit/54 MHz on the 642)...it has a better picture than any cheap DVD player I've owned.

EDIT: the bad thing is that it lacks an S-Video out and optical S/PDIF. And for some reason doesn't support dts decoding, although it may support passthrough (I haven't tried).

A modded xbox is far superior, although it is slightly more expensive unless you can find a good deal on a used one. Softmodding an xbox is easy, plus you can play games with it.

I'd say for around $200 you could get a modded xbox with a bigger drive in it and a wireless access point (flash a WRT54G with the DD-WRT firmware for a $50 WAP) that will be every bit as good as a HTPC, except for the video recording part of it.

I only have 10 gigs in my HTPC. The answer is hundreds of gigabytes on network

I have several XBMC machines throughout the house. I can watch/listen to anything anywhere.

If you don't want to go the modded route, there are lots of media devices out there now. However mind you most require server side software running to access your files.

I got the Philips DVP5960 DVD Player with HDMI, 1080i Upscaling, DivX Ultra, USB direct


I've been happy with the performance and quality of the upscaling but wish it supported more formats than just divx.

1) i burn a lot of stuff to DVDs (mainly dramas/tv shows for the s/o, anywhere between 10-25 eps depending on the quality)
2) i've probably owned my DVP642 for at least 3 years - saw extensive use for the last few months due to major acquisitions of foreign dramas
3) modded xbox seems too expensive; i think i can get a used DVP642 for around ~$35
4) but i would have been willing to pay more for say a DVP5140/DVP5960 if it was at a good price

hey, I am trying to figure out what divx dvd player i should buy, I am looking at the philips DVP642 and the Philips DVP5960. I really like the hdmi output in the DVP5960 but it doesnt offer as many formats. I was wondering if anyone know had the dvp5960 ever struggled with figuring out how to get the right format or if it usually worked out. I cant really do any encoding my self becasue i have a pretty crappy laptop. so i just want to burn them from the file i downloaded off the internet. any suggestions are welcome
