So what's the difference between the political parties in the US?

Being in the UK, we don't really get to find out this information without trawling through websites, so I was hoping that you kind folks 😉 could summarise things for me.

I'm just after an explanation, not a flame war.

Good luck with that.

I'm not touching this one with a 10 foot pole. This whole thread will go down in flames in about three posts.

There really isn't much difference. The main difference lies only in that Democrats want to spend the government's expropriated wealth on 'social welfare' programs, and Republicans want to spend the government's expropriated wealth on the warfare state, and corporations that have political ties. It is really just a matter of welfare vs. warfare.

Tweedle Dee was on the run,
his malicious wiles all undone,
when on his path he spied a gun,
And picked it up
to have some fun.

Tweedle Dum could not help but see
his brother and rival gain property,
and made fast with glee
the ground to feet,
"Halt good brother, that belongs to me!"

As 'tween these poor souls,
by greed driven bold,
their veins unfold
from boiling blood,
a stranger espies the feud.

"Ah!", says he layed prone,
"It makes best I hasten home,
for between these two, base,
I see no wont to atone,
well enough is best left alone."

So Democrats = social stuff and Republicans = military stuff?

That pretty much sums it up, yeah. Democrats = social stuff, republicans = military stuff/corporate welfare.

They also support welfare and income transfers for old people. But both parties support that. We are looking for differences here.

Well, I've seen nothing in the last 20 years that states otherwise.

The Democrats are like "New Labour", and the Republicans are like the Torys on PCP.

Not quite. Tories are openly against immigration whereas Repubs will not support anti-immigration policies because a lot of their base takes advantage of the cheaper labor of legal and illegal migrants.

Also Democrats and Republicans differ in their stands on major political issues in the US, like abortion and mixing religion and state, which are largely non-issues in UK politics.

Uh he did say "on PCP".

Which cracked me up 🙂

Formula for Deciphering P&N Questions:

Quote from Liberal about Conservative+Quote from Liberal about Liberals=Truth about Liberals

Same thing in reverse.

So Democrats = Robin Hood?

AWESOME.

They're sort of like a Robin Hood that steals, but never quite gives the money to the poor.

Robin Hood stole from middle class families, like the IRS and the Federal Reserve does, (not to mention states with property taxes and sales taxes)? Remind me again how the story goes...

When did the Democrats become champions of the minority races? Wasnt it the Republicans who fought for their emancipation in the US Civil War?

To overly simplify, yup. I supppse this means that this is QFT.

Ah okay, that makes more sense now 🙂
I know that none of these analogies are perfect, but for someone who's never been involved whatsoever in the US election process, it's difficult to "break in", and this just makes it a little easier to understand.

Yes, the reason I said "New Labour" is that the Democrats really are not into welfare nearly as much as those of us in say, the U.K or Australia would understand a left wing party to be.
