So what's the deal with this RAID thing...?

I'm starting to run out of space on my 40gig hard drive that I use for storing multimedia files. I'm debating on either purchasing a larger (60-80gb) drive to replace the 40gig or to purchase the exact same 40gig and RAID 0 (isn't that striping....both drives viewed as one) the two together using the Highpoint controller that came with my Epox.

Are there any pros and cons to using the RAID setup that you could tell me? A friend of mine said that RAID shouldn't be used on computers at home b/c they don't have enough processing power and I'd suffer a performance hit. I didn't think that at all so part of me wonders if there's some truth in that or if he's just full of it...hehehe.

Quick System Specs:
Athlon XP 1600
512MB PC2100 DDR RAM
Epox 8K7A+
Maxtor 5T040H4 40gig 7200 RPM (main)
Western Digital 400BB 40gig 7200 RPM (to be RAIDed if I go that route)

I think that's all the important stuff.....please let me know your thoughts!!

better of getting a really leage ide drive. 80 GB drive at newegg.com goes for under 100 bucks

raid 0 will run a little bit faster, butyou are at much greater risk at loosing all your data due to a bad raid error.
