Perhaps home ones are.
The ones we use specifically designed to treat certain areas most definitely work.

Probably because you take an ionic breeze and reconfigure the proton modulator to emit tachyons through a crossphase transducer in order to shift the phase of the offending particles from dimensions 1-3 to dimensions 2-4.

If you have forced air heating and/or central air, just get a good filter for the furnace as it will help filter the entire house.

Yes but unless you strap the green and red wires together on the subbase the indoor fan motor only runs when there is a call for heat or a/c. No indoor fan motor = no air filtering.

my thermostat has a switch to run the fan independant of the heat/cooling

The true HEPA filters work really well to cut down on dust. I've got one in each room of my apartment and I can tell by the build-up of dust if they've been on or not.

Now see, I want one of those. Tachyons are pretty useful, and can be just plain fun.

Mine does too, and from personal experience I wouldn't recommend running the central air fan 24/7, even for just a few days, because it may cause the fan control relay contacts to stick to the point that the fan will only run 24/7 and the thermostat switch will no longer cut the fan off at all and you may have to end up replacing the fan control relay to fix it.
As for purifiers, the ones we were using for a while(the kind with a larger chassis with a special proprietary filter) worked OK, it just got too expensive after a while having to routinely replace the high-priced filter every couple of months.
