so whats a real good SATA drive now adays ?

hi

i currently have an 80 gig HD and i am beginign to seriously feel the pinch as the PC is mainly a family multimedia (photos, videos, webbrowsing etc.) and a gaming rig. games now adays, especially the ones i play seem to take up on average 4-8 gigs each.

so i am thinking of getting a new HD, something i will be able to transfer into a future rig upgrade in a year or so and still get decent performance out of it.

i'm looking for a SATA HD around 200 gigs in volume, with decent performance, but most importantly, ease of setup and reliability.

also, my current drive is EIDE, and i would like to keep it as a backup / archive drive and make the new one as my main. i understand the current boot sequence is EIDE first SATA 2nd, how do i set this up so i boot of off the SATA and not the EIDE ?

i was thinking of entirely removing the current HD and doing a clean windows install with the new one, then add the old HD back after the O/S is up and restoring all my stuff from backup.

are there any problems i should be aware of in runing a STA and an EIDE drive on same rig ? if so how can i resolve them or what precautions should i take to avoid them ?


just for reference, this will be sitting on Gigabyte 8IK1100 mobo.

Seagates come with 5yr warranty's and the new ones have NCQ...as far as booting up with SATA 1st go into the BIOS and label SATA or SCSI as 1st boot-up.
 
I second Seagate. Best warranty, extremely quiet (if not the quietest), great speed/low access times, low heat, never had one fail, NCQ (recently announced technology, has to do with data accessing) is supposed to make them as fast as SCSI drives, etc. I already own a pair of Seagate drives and they are amazing.

FYI I've owned several drives from Maxtor, IBM, and WD. Seagate comes out on top. WD is good too though, but I'm a Seagate fanboy now.
 
nk only the 160gb seagate has ncq right now, but the newer bigger ones wont be far behind, they should be out soon
