so whats a better cpu AMD 1.2 or 1.2 T-Bird

I have a Abit KT7A board and have to buy a new chip a duron-morgan 1.2 or T-Bird 1.2 what is better or should i flash my bios and get a AMD XP cpu and hope it works. Will a Duron O/C to the stock board setting of fsb 133 with proper cooling?

I may be a little partial to durons, but I'll say...get the duron! Yeah unlock it lower mult if you have to and up FSB to 133, if not higher. the morgan core has SSE and should perform almost as good as the Tbird....i looked on pricewatch and the 1.2 Tbird is 84 bucks and the 1.4 is 82....So your question comes down to:
What FSB can my memory handle? If it isn't much over 150 with fastest timings, then both the duron and 1.4 Tbird will hit that.
How much money do I have? 32 bucks may not seem like a lot, but there's very little performance increase, also you really need to go DDR to see major increases, your only as fast as your slowest component.......
Can I wait for Tbred? you said you needed a new chip....if you need one now obviously it's a no...otherwise I'd look into waiting for Tbred. I'm waiting for reviews on it to see what FSB speeds Tbred can get, then I might upgrade.

I'd say buy the duron and save up for a DDR platform. Your not gonna notice a huge difference in performance until you get outa the SDR arena. XP's are nice, however, DDR is nicer. I'm a huge fan of durons and DDR, in real world performance I can't tell a difference between my 1 gig morgan (158*9) and the XP1700@1826 that I had. (granted I now have 512 ram with the morgan and only 256 with the XP...may make a tad of a differance).

Get the T-Bird. It will overclock better (assuming you get a good stepping) and it performs better than an equally clocked Duron.

Are T-birds still better than a morgan? is extra cache that much better than extra instrucs on morgon chip? Would not a morgan O/C better because the lower temp? or do they not like fsb of 133?

The morgan based duron's still use aluminium interconnects like the sub 1ghz t-birds, this limits the o/c to a high of around 1.5ghz max but typically 1.4 is possible

Unless I am msitaken, you will need to stay away from the Morgan/Duron just like the XP. The two cause the same problem on non compatible mobos like the 1.x to 1.2 revision ABIT KT7a. If you have a Revision 1.3, then you are fine for any of them.

In regards to the difference in cache size, unless you are doing some serious 3D rendering or content creation type work, the Duron should not be percievably slower than the Athlon.

Good luck,
Jason.

Just update your bios to version 7N, the XP based cpu's work fine. Clock for clock they are very close in performance.

The benefits for a Duron Morgan are, cheaper, much cooler, SSE instructions, lower power requirements.

The Thunderbird has a slight edge in 3DMark 2001 at the same clock speed, and if it is AXIA or AYJHA stepping it will definately overclock
higher than any Morgan with aluminum interconnects.

Bang for the buck my vote goes for the Morgan.

You can connect the L1 bridges with a pencil on both cpu's easily, and try any combination of fsb speed and multiplier you want.
