I do find that some for-profit videos are either useful, or entertaining, but i detest their nature. And while the passion of a channel, say, like The Great War can push me over, or even a channel like Jotun Studio that is marketing, but ... not as manipulative .. i would still want to (metaphorically) burn all the Yogscasts and pewdiepies of youtube, who create content not out of passion but only for a paycheck.

Yeah, I know what you mean...it's the equivalent of trying to hard to be cool or funny in high school, it just kind of comes across as cringy, instead of legit. Because I don't mind 'cringy' if the information is good or if someone is passionate about their topic, but you can just tell when someone is pushing it from the money-making aspect...like when you have a friend who gets into MLM's & tries to sell you lotions or acai juice or essential oils or whatever, it just kind of taints the message.

Lol there was a for-profit channel once whose video started with "Hi guys it's me again, madeup1337name back with another video, today we talk about stuff"

Total number of videos on the channel: 1

Super friendly loud clear radio-school-diction voice talking about a subject they understand nothing of, IIRC yet another minecraft mod overview channel.

This guy clearly came to youtube to make money off the views and no other reason. And even worst than this are people who beg constantly for patreon, "support", and who - like the once renowned Totalbiscuit - claim they are "professional" journalists.

Guess what, if you dont have an editor who can fire you, if you cant be fined by the FCC, if you dont need to prove factuality and are not subject to the same libel and disclosure laws that legitimate news companies have to follow, you are not a professional. You, Totalbiscuit The Cynical Brit With Two Names, are exactly as much of a professional journalist as i am, and that amount is zero.

Unfortunately Youtube encourages this, because rather than having one gangnam style that earns millions and thousands of videos that they cannot quantify how productive they are for ads, they would rather standardize their platform into exclusively an ad-delivery machine.

Cue the various new regulations about offensive content, guns and other weapons, third party content, politics / sexuality (NOT porn) / edgy subjects, and anything anti-google.

Do you remember that youtube had a feature (one which singlehandedly made youtube into what it was) where you could REPLY TO VIDEO and it would link to your video reply?
Not that it didnt have problems, but it was the core to the open video forum that drew everyone to youtube to voice their opinion.

Then pewdiepie came along and google said ok everybody from now on needs to be like pewdiepie no more fat lesbian chicks or black emos n whatnot.

I love that show. I couldn't believe it was still on either. Last week I saw their video on the McLaren 570 spider where the voiceover talked about that great feeling of having the wind blow through your hair while the video had a bald guy driving it. The announcer guy has a soothing voice, but that show almost never has anything bad to say about any car.

I've heard them complain about cars being underpowered, having bad fuel mileage, having no rear legroom, or having confusing controls. They're subtle about it, though.

I could put you on, but won't. All kinds of stuff. But I'm not super into it ATM because my DSL is <5mbps and the videos are usually choppy with halts. Sometimes not, depending on I don't know what. I think some browsers are better with streaming video than others, or maybe it has to do with my PCs' memory. This machine has 8GB but my other big screen affair is a Windows 10 32bit machine with 4GB RAM.

I go through phases - quadcopters > documentaries recreating old/ancient lifestyles > hauntings/spirit activity > cryptids, monstrosities > home improvement, home search > why I quit [retail store] > my Xfactor/Idol experience > what's wrong with music > prank videos

You get the idea.

Same basic format just different stuff. I've been watching it right before bed on my tv cause I can find quick 5-10 mins videos. A regular show I feel obligated to watch the whole time.

Expats abroad, like Harald Baldr, serpentza, laowhy86, ADVChina, Lost in the Pond, etc.

Electronics hobby and repair gurus like EEVBlog, Voultar, GadgetUK167, GameTechUS, RetroRGB, etc

Vintage tech, like LGR, TechMoan, 8BitGuy, etc

Science/physics, like Thunderf00t, Cody’sLab, Sharkee, PBS Space Time, Minute Physics, and more.

Aerospace like Mustard, Scott Manley, Vintage Space, Curious Android, etc

Humor like RedLetterMedia, ScreenJunkies, Epic Rap Battles of History, Political Juice, etc

History/facts like Knowing Better, Extra Credits, Today I Found Out, Fact Fiend, etc

Awesome, I picked up a few new things to watch! If you get a chance, what other science/physics channels do you watch?

Mostly I like watching stupid people hurt themselves in really amusing ways. Any video that stats with a guy holding a beer in one hand, something explosive or flammable in the other and segues to him saying "Hey Bubba, watch this..." is going to be 100 times more entertaining than anything that comes from Hollywood.

Thanks, but it doesn’t get any deeper than those. ;)

Scott Manley kinda blurs the line since he talks a lot about orbital mechanics. SciShow / SciShow Space cover a lot of breakthroughs and news. Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell somehow manages to convey a lot of complicated stuff in a simple, mainstream way. SmarterEveryDay is kind of a fun ride with a (former?) NASA guy. engineerguy goes into everything from harmonic frequencies in bridge construction to draft angles in injection molding. Mr Carlson’s Lab, Marco Reps (his deadpan is an acquired taste :)), Afrotechmods, etc are electronics channels that sometimes delve into physics and underlying theory. I already saw someone mention Technology Connections, which is one part Techmoan and one part engineerguy.

Sweet, I'll check them out. Thanks!
