So what programs are good to keep a system or server healthy?

I've scheduled daily AV scans, defrag, and CCleaner on my server computer. Anything else I should schedule to run to keep it in prime shape?

Ok, now I've changed the defrag to once every week. I'll consider the backups when my new 200GB HDD comes in. Is there a simple program to backup? And since the HDD I'm getting (Seagate) is internal, should I keep the backup HDD always connected in the system, or buy an external bay?

Daily defrags aren't necessarily a good thing. You want to defrag IF your hard drive is pretty fragmented. Defragging too often might even reduce performance.

I'd add in a spyware-removal tool (Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc). Also get Acronis True Image for a backup of your partition with the operating system (yes, Norton Ghost works too, but True Image can handle RAID backups!).

you were doing sooo good with the mention of the daily defrags actually possibly reducing the performance...but why would he need spyware removal on a SERVER? the server shouldnt be browsing the web...but on a regular system deifnately something you should have on there.

defiantely want a backup soln like trueimage though.

I'd run something like mobo monitor just to make sure nothing is overheating and everything stays in good working order

No need for daily defrags (monthly is about as often as you need it).

Get rid of CCleaner ... it's unnecessary for a server.

You need a robust backup system for a server. Consider a mix of frequent partial backups and weekly or monthly full backups.

The system will be a 24/7 always on, always connected system. I will only VPN to it to download torrents and to establish a secure connection to VPN to use my home internet when I am public.

Given that, there will be the RARE websurfing occuring, maybe somewhere around 10 webpages/week.
