Yeah, seriously, your kid needs a set of sheets, a mini fridge, and a crappy TV. Everything you send will get destroyed. If she needs to acquire more crap, let her move in first. Every college town has a Wal Mart.

No TV. They are time wasters and her roommate will have one already. Two TVs are a waste of space.

A basic tool set, particularly since she has a car.

Yep, we were just discussing that, the TV stays home for now.

Her notebook will be essentially a desktop, and I purchased an extended warranty for it. She's a music major so no killer notebook is necessary.

Just checked and a microwave is allowed, as well as a G F grill, rice cooker, etc...

I'm going up with my PC, some new sheets, a 2GB flash drive, and a cell phone.
I'll get what is needed when I'm there.

I was contemplating bringing a shitty TV up with me and gaming consoles, but I figured that would be replaced by my PC anyway. That and it would be distracting.

What I'm really looking for are ways to idiot-proof my computer since I'm paranoid like that.

tell her to take about half the stuff she plans to take (there won't be any room)

as far as text books go...buy them at the bookstore (they'll have a certain date into the quarter/semester that they'll be returnable for full refund). This is just so you have them for first week or two, but go online and see if you can find an international edition (same as u.s. but cheeeap) or just a cheaper version of the book online.

google search usually works.

try ebay, amazon...etc. search by isbn #

so what's her major? (forget it, i see you said "music major")

i see someone said egg crate mattress pad. throw in a mattress cover too, and usually dorm beds are extra long twin. so be sure you find that out so you can buy the right size sheets/comforter. nothing like going to make your bed the first time and finding the you've been short sheeted. :p

pencil sharpener been mentioned? electric please.
how about an emergency only credit card with a pre-set limit?
or a Bluetooth headset?

Also and I can't stress this enough. If there's an option to pay $100 dollars or whatever to move in early, DO IT. She'll get her choice of bunk/bed, get to setup her stuff, get to say bye and whatnot without the HUGGGEEE stressful day that is move-in day.

how about a gun? at least some mace. not trying to freak you out, but boston is something of a college town, and i see tons of girls that leave themselves in vulnerable situations. and that's before they get high or drunk.

Actually, getting some keychain mace is a good idea

She's going to be a music education major and wants to earn a Master's in performance, that way she's hopefully good enough to play in a symphony if she wants.

She's not a fan of the headsets, I've had her try a couple. She likes her wired ones for MP3's/stereo listening.

Forgot about the long twin bed stuff, I short sheeted myself when I was in the dorms.

No guns on campus. Mace is a good idea though.

a good set of headphones is definitely recommended... nice to have when you want to listen to music while pulling an all-nighter in the same room as a sleeping roommate.

You're going to be paying a lot more money for it there than if you shopped around a few months before college. I hit up the circulars weekly for places like Target, Walmart, K-Mart, etc. when I was a getting ready for college.

everyone pretty much covered everything...but i think telling her your opinion on college and what to look out for is probably the most valuable.

Yeah, if you are a sissy.

On a serious note, Amazon.com has great used book sales from resellers. Just check early and you'll find good prices.

I got my $130 econ book for $20, etc.
