Can/bottle opener. I'm serious. When money was tight and I didn't want ramen, I'd be cracking open cans of beans for my meals.

Birth control, you irresponsible goober!

And good God, spoiling her enough?

Edit: Ronstang beat me to it by a minute apparently...and in addition, make sure she knows how a condom is used correctly. I'm continually amazed by the number of people who think you "just roll it on".

My only kid, figure I might as well :)

& hell no I'm not going to talk to her about condoms. We had the "An abortion is always an option in my house" talk already (with sincere apologies to anyone that might be offended by that)

amen. Usually 40-50% cheaper than my on campus bookstore. Ebay is even cheaper, especially for the international versions of textbooks. I got the international version of my book for Basic Heat Transfer for $20 shipped; it was $180 from the on campus bookstore.

Does she have a meal plan? Get ready for food shopping. Toiletries, towels, things like that. Look into shelves.

You can definitely get books cheaper off of eBay/Half.com, but I've had very good results with shipping on Marketplace. It's really been pretty fast compared to other alternatives.

Yep, meal plan is mandatory for freshmen.

What kind of shelves work?

Abortions are way less mentally (and physically) scarring than birth control.

Seriously, how old are you?

For the towels and sheets and stuff

I got mine a couple weeks ago at JC Penny's on sale.
I think it was like 40% off

I don't know if it was nationwide or even if it's still going on...

so instead of talking about safe sex/condoms/the pill....you went with "just go get an abortion"?

No free night and weekend?

As for the printers, it depends on what the school offers in terms of printing. My undergrad had free printing so a printer in the dorm was useless. But schools that charge for such things, it's better to get a laser printer

As for fridge and microwave, coordinate w/ the roommate at least for year 1 and figure it out later.

Money, always more money.

Earplugs are really good idea.

At some point about mid-semester offer her a free weekend trip somewhere away from school for her and a friend. Nothing fancy or far away. Just something to get her out of the dorms. Dorm life is hell on one's mental well being.

Laundry basket.

Bicycle.

More money.

You are all deranged.

When I went to undergrad, I was provided with linens, shelves, and a meal plan. I *bought* my own television. I *bought* my own PC. With money I earned at my *job*.

No wonder 70% of the people I meet from my generation are fucking worthless.

But, apparently, not with what *should* be your focus at this point, which is producing a human being capable of existing without you in our society. I read a great article on this kind of thing a little while ago. I recommend you peruse it:
