Or Crackberry as I have seen so many times. I have never used one so i don't know. I have heard about this for awhile and recently read a few articles that mention "Crackberry"..what is the big deal? IM? Email? Internet? Are people really that addicted to these things? Adults especially, kids I could sorta see.

You really can't work in the consulting industry without one. An answer to questions is expected most hours of the day and weekend. Unless you want to sit at your computer, portable email is the only way to go.

Yes, it's amazing. How else can you google the name of the bar that has 2 dollar Jaeger bombs and then google maps it to find the exact location when you're already stumbling around downtown? Oh and yeah that work thing too...

It's not like they sit in a restaurant, pull out the blackberry, and start analyzing data for a half hour or anything. I'd say it's more for allowing simple things to be done quickly.

Example: Employee emails you and asks for approval to purchase a necessary item on Thursday night so he can finish it Friday - respond approving it and now you've just gotten that done much sooner than waiting to see them on Friday.

Whenever you combine stupid people and lots of hype, you get something like the Blackberry. When it's used as it's supposed to, in a business environment for pushing emails instantly to the device, that's perfectly fine, it's the best you can get for that.

But so many people buy it and don't get the data/email plans, they just want it to say "Oh I'll just use my Blackberry." or something similarily stupid.

Same reason someone buys a Lambo in NYC, just to drive it to get groceries.

Exactly. I use mine for doing quick things quicker. When you get 175 (real business) emails a days its a lot easier to respond on the spot, it keeps things flowing on the other end of things if someone is waiting for an easy yes or no. Plus its great for reading the big emails during downtime like riding the bus or airport.

I have one that's work provided and in ways it's better than someone calling me all the time.

I can just get back to them on the fly when I feel like it.

Plus with the Google Apps on it, it's fairly useful.

There is a very strange phenomenon that occurs with Blackberries. Watch a group of people with Blackberries. If one person checks his, the rest of the group feels compelled to check theirs.

I feel the same way when I'm at work with other Blackberry users. It's very strange.

It's mostly awesome for non-work uses. :p

Go go Google Maps and access to the Web everywhere! I think the last good use I got out of my 8700 in this vein was looking up the lyrics to Let Your Backbone Slide. :p

I'll admit, I'm one of the Crackberry addicts. First, when I'm stuck in a meeting, it helps me kill time as by definition, meetings are boring.

Second, because our offices span 4 buildings and over half a mile in distance on the same street, I find myself frequently in a building away from my desk when a critical item/issue comes up. It's nice to be able to get that stuff taken care of without having to go back to my desk by either answering the emails or making a quick cell phone call.

Lastly...there is no lastly, but everything should come in threes.

Yeah, that's one of the big things, it really lets you work efficiently because of the inherent differences in a call vs email. Email is down to the point (usually) and once you get it, you can make a reply at your own convenience. It's much nicer than dealing with voicemails.

It does many...however; the rewards are usually pretty good.

Most of the time for most of us the blackberry is quiet after hours. It's only emergencies or special needs.

It does suck when you are supporting an national company and some asshat from the west coast calls in at 1am your time because they can't close a deal because they somehow unplugged their keyboard.

Heaven forbid he just call me and ask me, thus saving both of us a whole lot of time.

Seriously, it would take about 20 seconds for him to call me, ask me, and get approval instead of 2 minutes sending and email and waiting for a response. Sometimes less technolgoy > more technology.

I find it addictive because I can always stay on top of things at work. If I take vacation, in the past, I'd get back to the office and be buried for a week catching up. With the Blackberry, I can rattle off a few emails, stay in touch in case there's a distaster, etc... It's sort of a love hate relationship.

Edit: also, as mentioned here previously, it is great for rapidly responding to YES/NO type emails. Such as when an employee asks to take off, purchase a license for Visio, or asks if the remake to Halloween is worth seeing.

We use "Blueberry" all the time at work, it's slang for an application link in a GEAC System21 application linking to a specific role menu, program, or task in an iSeries AS/400 database

the term Blueberry holds a ton more weight than Blackberry at my job
