A group of guys gathers around a table, creates characters for themselves, rolls some dice, and....?

How does the game work? I've never played.

It's the devil!!! REPENT! It leads to drinking, drugs and violence, you have to sell your soul and perform bloody rituals to participate!!!

Or if you don't believe the fundies it's basically something like Diablo II but in a world which plays in your mind. It requires actual imagination!

Edit: Oh, and the world and adventures are made up by one of the persons of the group, called the dungeonmaster. The rest have to decide what they do when they encounter situations, and the dice are used for seeing how much damage you do (hence the term 'hit-dice' in computer games too), and for avoiding traps and such.

Edit 2: Etc

I remember a guy in Middle school who tried to get everone to play it..anyway. IIRC it goes something like you get turns, and choose where to go in say, a castle. The room you go in may be dark, and then some goblin pops out...shit like that. Hell...thats all I can remember.

Not quite sure either, but I saw a bunch of guys on TV that played it, and I thought to my self, "Not one of those people will ever get laid"

I know one of the dudes is the gamemaster. He creates the place and story that the players are in. I've never played it, sounded half interesting though.

Yeah, think neverwinter nights, but without a computer.

The dice are required to standardize some actions (such as the use of skills, resisting the effects of magic, or hitting someone else with your ub3r-l33t sw0rd 0f d34thn3ss). Basically, a person called a "Dungeon Master" or DM sits in arbitration of the game. He/she is the person that sets the specific rules (which are for the most part outlined in books sold by Wizards of the Coast), decides what world you'll play in, controls/acts out all of the creatures that you'll encounter besides yourselves, etc. The game is very communication-based, in that mostly everything you do is spoken. Sometimes people use maps and figurines so as to avoid confusion in that respect, but talking is still the main channel through which anything is done.

Yes, long after I had lost my virginity. Weird huh?

Heh, I was a hardcore geek in my younger years. I was a Boy Scout, played AD&D, had my own computer (with a 2400 baud modem and a 1571 floppy drive!! ;) )....I got laid quite frequently.

The most basic explanation would be pretend with rules and a ref so everyone can agree on who stabbed who first. Dice are used to determine and of the random/variable elements of the rules.

It's just like playing a video game on the computer --but a lot slower. Ever played an RPG where you have experience points, gain levels, train for specific weapon proficiencies or had to buy supplies and healing potions, etc? Same thing. But done a LOT slower.

You go through creating a character (just skipped two hours of extensive explanation right there :p). Then, when you have a group of characters of different types (warriors, wizards, thieves, paladins, etc), you form a "party" and just... do crap. There is one person in the group called the Dungeon Master (or DM for short) who controls everything other than the "party" members and the dice. The DM can let you wander around and get yourself in trouble with the locals, or he can guide you through a dungeon on the way to the castle to rescue the fair maiden from the evil sorcerer!

Bleh. I used to play, but it's a huge time-suck and I constantly found myself staring at the people in the group going "WTF are you doing!? You can't attack a ROCK on the ground along the path. There's NO POINT" and getting very frustrated with stupid people like that who can't just play the game.

Anyway, you gain levels, gain abilities, etc. It can be fun if you have a DM who knows what he's doing and who knows how to keep the party members in line.

Read this. I still have my copy, along with the Monster Manual. My roommate has the Dungeon Master's Guide, but that's not recommended for players to read. It teaches you tons of ways to cheat and get away with it. :p

Despite the geeky stigma attached to it, its actually a fun game. If I ever have a son I plan on getting him into playing it as a method of birth control.

See if you can find a copy of the d20 DM guide online somewhere and take a browse through it, that will give you a better idea of how the game is played than anyone else here can. In a nutshell, the dice rolling adds randomness to the game while the DM sets the atmosphere, keeps the enemies coming, and guides you on your 'quests'. Theres many different ways to play, from straight dungeon crawls (think diablo 2) to more story based action (think FF7). Another cool thing is you can make your character pretty much however you want, either evil or good, lawful or chaotic, etc..

What I meant to say is that the few people I saw playing it on the TV show would never get laid. It looks like Skyclad1uhm1 took it to heart and is now accusing me of being a Catholic for some reason. I will now leave this thread as that is all of my input on the subject. :)

D&D is basically how role playing games were played before computers were good enough to make interesting D&D games.

Believe it or not, almost all Role PLaying Games these days are heavliy based on the concepts that D&D developed decades ago.

Paper and pencil still rule over those computer games, IMHO.

I was excercising that weird stuff called 'joking', which unfortunately was not quite clear to you it seems. I'm not a D&D player myself, nor have I been.

Agreed.
And you cant cheat at D&D. Not possible. DM has final ruling, it either goes or it dont, but if he dont want it, it aint happening.

Man, I miss playin D&D. That was some fun stuff right there.

And believe it or not, I have actually picked up women cause I played. And yes, they were hot. :)

The main reason for this is because a good DM can bring out the best and the worst in people because they can actually see how you're reacting to the game in front of them. Some of the best quests we ever did were made up on the spot, as a knee jerk reaction to the group being too cocky or because our characters weren't working together.

You CAN cheat in DnD. A level 5 spell caster can kill a silver dragon. It's cheating. :) That's why there have been revisions over the years instead of just additions to equipment, etc. DnD3.5 is coming out really quickly, too, if it isn't already out.
