So what does rolling admissions MEAN exactly....

I know it means that they review apps on a first come first serve basis and notify you in 2-3 weeks instead of waiting until a specified date, but what does it mean beyond that? Is it generally less competitive applying to a rolling admissions school than to a school with a set deadline and when they notify everyone at the same time? Like, since you're not really being directly compared with any other applicants. I'm not sure...

Essentially that's true. You have a better chance of making into a school you want to the earlier you apply. I'm in a dilemma because of this. I'm applying to med schools this year and I've already started, but I haven't taken the MCAT yet, but I don't feel like I will be fully prepared by April. So, the dilemma comes down to waiting til august to take the MCAT and miss out on rolling admissions or bite the bullet and take it in April.

But does it mean that you are not being directly compared to any other students since it is first come first serve? So if you meet the requirements and if there's space you should basically get in?

It's used by admissions office's of party schools, you need to be able to roll a proper blunt to even be considered for enrollment. :p

About a month ago I applied to a universit with a rolling admissions procedure. Even though I didn't have to apply for the Fall semester until much later on, I did and perhaps it was a good decision because I got accepted.

It's for transfer, not freshman, so I'm not sure if right now is considered late, early, or just normal.

it still means you should apply asap. the later in the period you apply, the fewer spots that are open and the more competitive it will be. you will be compared to the bunch that are currently pending.

Yep, early is good, and right now would be considered pretty late for freshman. But for transfers? I'm not sure.

That's what I was confused about, does it get more competitive as time passes? I would think the requirements would remain the same. They would just get to an applicant, determine if they still have space, and if they do, and if they meet the requirements, check, next.

um, there's usually a start date before which you can not apply. by "asap" i think both freesia39 and i mean that you should apply as close to that start date as possible.

even by your description, it will get more competitive because the chances they don't have space for you will increase as time goes on.

Interesting...

There was no start date I am aware of. I am applying for transfer for this fall. I'm sure a lot of people applied last fall for this fall but I'm sure many will still be applying through the rest of the spring and maybe even summer, maybe.

if there's no start date but you know people have already applied, then the point of reference to which 'asap' applies would be now. the fact that other people are applying late just means you should apply now to beat them out.
