comments? critiques?.....

open floor...

should I really keep the mail server seperate? I remember being told that for secuity reasons it was safer, but is it necessary?

Looks almost identical to my network, but I use an LRP firewall instead of smoothwall. Smoothwall wasn't well known when I setup my network, or I might have used it.

Since Smoothwall can do DHCP and the like I would leave the router out of the network, unless of course you are just using it as a switch. Which it looks like your doing.

I have one server for :Apache, MySQL, Mailserver. Then I have another server for fileserver and also have it setup for LTSP. This works out quite well for me.

Since it looks almost exactly like my currently existing network, I would have to say that great minds think alike. Or something to that effect.

edit: just read your second post. I see no overly important reason for the mailserver to be seperate on such a small network. It's not like your worried about internal security.

edit2: Just thought of one more thing. I also run a caching DNS server on my first server. I point all my machines to it and it's great to have nice simple name resolution inside my network. Also, keeps me online when my cable service loses their DNS servers, although this has only happened once. Takes a little while to setup, but it was alot of fun to learn.

I'm really not getting the hang of DNS. My registrar is Network Solutions and the DNS name servers are run by zonedit, precisely because I have a DYNAMIC IP(I should have Stated that)

Anyways, why would having internal DNS help me to access the server? basically I will have the website folder available from the Workstations, so that all is needed in to update the files.

Thanks

I believe the software I run is ez-ipupdate. It works quite well to update my domain name to my current dynamic IP. I use EasyDNS for my domain registration and forwarding. They also cache the email for my domain which will help if my email server ever goes down.

Having a caching DNS allows you to bypass your ISPs DNS if they go down. You can map addresses directly from a higher level DNS. Having it setup locally allows you to use simple names for all your computers. Once they are mapped in the DNS files and your machines use your server as a DNS, all you have to do to map a share is type the name of the machine instead of the IP address.

Garnted if you are using windows file sharing this is already done in network neighborhood, but I hate windows networking. And of course there was the fact that I wanted to learn how to setup a DNS. There are quite a few howtos out there.

edit: Smoothwall is a software firewall running on linux. It basically takes over the machine you run it on. This take over makes it way more stable and keeps humans from screwing it up too much. The downside is that the machine is unusable as anything but a firewall.

Actually, the software i used was Visio 2002. A very nice, but EXPENSIVE schematic program....

I was using the networking tools, but there are loads more ranginfrom mechanical enginnerring to electrical wiring to flowcharts...

Basically, if you have to describe ANY PROCESS, simplistic or technical this is the program. IT was initial produced by the company named VISIO until Micros..well you know.... bought them out.....

At least they kept the GOOD parts.

Yeah, I am using smoothwall. THe great thing is that the .iso is only 20megs, so it provides for running itself on a slow, crappy punk of a machine.

The only change I am thinking of making is to putthe mail server onto the Webserver comp. lot really that unsecure comparitively, and it will save $$ on the eletricity bill).

I might also switch to using MS exchange(for my parents) so I can have the collaboration and calander additions. Maybe sql server on that Win2kAdv Server machine instead of just MySQL

What is the difference between MySQL and SQL server. Is it just he fact that Mysql is open source?

Thanks

Yeah, I'm trying to stick with open source everything. For one thing I enjoy a challenge and another is that I am still a student and broke. I also run postnuke for my family so we can share family albums and history. There are a ton of options with a postnuke site. Linux terminal server project has been a side project for about 6 months. My plan is to have a very fast server for my movies and mp3s and have silent workstations to port the video and music to the stereo and tv. It will probably be a few years before I get that running. Another nice project is RIMPS. It is a webpage based mp3 server, allowing you to organize all your mp3s. You can create playlists and have seperate user accounts. The really nice thing is that my mp3s can be played from any machine with a browser and a net connection.

Both my servers run linux. I have been "learning" linux for about 2 years now. Quite an experience. As soon as I complete my Phd, I am going to switch to linux on my desktop as well.

As for electricity, when you take the monitor out of the picture, you get about 2/3 reduction in power consumption. I run 5 machines 24/7 and my electric bill didn't change more than about $10/month.
