ON my desk at home, there's a motherboard sitting on my desk. It's a MSI K7 Master, an AMD 760 based board. It's got an AthlonXP 1600+ in it, with an SK6 copper heatsink on it. There's also a 256mb stick of pc2100 DDR in it.

right next to it is my current box: it's running dual P3-450's in a BX board with 512mb of PC-100 SDRAM.

Should I bother swapping in the new board? Then I'd have to reinstall two OSes (redhat 7.3, win2k), all my software, etc...
I hate reinstalling.

What would you do?

I would send everything to you so you could re-install all the software for me and then ship it back? 😀

If you don't game, I say screw it and just leave it as is. I have grown tired of formating and reinstalling all my crap.

backup and start the new power generation baby..

hehe but then again I havent changed my hard ware since.... PIII 700e's were the thing in...

🙂

still running 700@933mhz since 1999 hehehe

You might be able to keep the 2k install if you unistalled the PCI bus before rebooting.

And go from a dual processor setup to single at the same time, and from an intel chipset to an AMD chipset? I don't think it's very likely to work....

Same here... no need to upgrade 🙂

If you don't play games or do other processor intensive things then I doubt it's worth your time...

I've done the cross chipset before, Intel to AMD; that is remedied when you uninstall the drivers for the PCI bus. (which in turn removes all devices attached, being the boot resources that would likely be addressed incorrectly were to do a straight swap)

As far as going from dual to single is concerned, that is actually a seperate kernel, and I'm not sure if 2k is smart enough to be able to pull the new one or not.

I'd buy a new case, more memory and new peripherals and finish the new machine. Then, I'd sell the old one to cover the cost of more RAM and new peripherals. You should be able to break even or come out ahead with a newer machine. 🙂

send the mobo, ram and xp to me😉 i'll find a place for them. and you won't have to do anything to the P3s.😉

but seriously, if it's good enough for you. don't mess with it. it ain't broke.
