So what are the best android apps?

I have 3 Android phones now, bought for Roku app, still using my Windows phone for data. No activation (yet) on my Android phones (cheapies).

Question: Can I use one of these Android phones for GPS in my car (i.e. offline), just using GPS? If so, is the default GPS app adequate/best? TIA...

PS. When my Windows phone goes belly up from whatever I plan to activate an Android phone, maybe one of my cheapies ($30 phones, 2 Tracfones and a "SimpleMobile") or get a better one.
 
What is the best Android photo editing app, in your guys' recommendation?

I tried editing a photo on my Galaxy S10 after going to Gallery and seeing it had editing tools, but they weren't in depth enough (couldn't even change the font size).
 
I recommend home launcher. It gives you a little more functionality. Holding down the home button just brings down a list of shortcuts. You can still set it up to access your assistant app as well.
Tasker is also pretty nice but it's not free.

Snapseed. It can edit RAW as well

lol, I was just going to say the same.

PicsART is photoshop-lite. It has all the usual frills of PS, without having its obvious technical impermeability. PA is a good substitute for nearly every photo editing app.

Oddly enough, there is a PS version for mobile phones as well - apparently. its not as good as the original .

The main apps that you think are amazing, happen to be gimicky (eg. Photo apps) but the real MVP's are those applications which safeguard and fortify your phone (like drive cleaners, anti-viruses, VPN's, etc.).

Beware those anti virus programs which send your browsing history to the creator.

So, I'm less than 24 hours into my new (almost) Galaxy S9. I am transitioning from my 5 years on Windows Phone (that now dead MS experiment).

I have MyTube installed on my Windows Phone, ported that phone's number to my Galaxy last night. I paid a couple bucks IIRC for MyTube.

Well, I'm wondering about a Youtube app for my Galaxy.

Searching, I sew Newpipe touted at several sites. It's free. I search for it in Play Store on the Galaxy and it finds some things:

Newpipe
Newpipe app
Newpipe downloader
Newpipe app youtube

But if I click on any of those I get a long list of things I can click on and presumably download and install, however not a single one is called "Newpipe" WTH is going on?

It means your installing a bunch of apps that you have no idea about.

Google Play sucks when it comes to security and verifying the apps are legit. So you better make sure what you install is legit.

Does it mean that Google Play doesn't think enough of Newpipe to offer it? Because I don't see the opportunity to download it.

So, how do I...

1. Find apps that are worthy
2. How do I make sure they're legit?
3. How do I download them?

AFAIK, Google Play is the one conduit to download and install apps on Android. Am I wrong there???

You can download apps from other sources by changing the settings, but by default the Google Play store is the default.

You can download whatever you want to, it's your phone. But based on how you worded your OP, it sure sounded like you were downloading unknown apps based on searching for "Newpipe". I just said you had better make sure whatever you decide to download is what you think it is.

no, no, no... I didn't search for "newpipe" in a browser. I only heard of it today after searching for favorite or best youtube app for android. Around 3 of the most prominent google hits were titled things like 5 best youtube apps for 2020 (two of them) a 3rd was 10 favorites (5 for iPhone, 5 for Android). Those best of pages each had Newpipe as number 1.

The searches for Newpipe were done in the search applet at the top of the screen that I saw on my S9 Android phone when in Google Play app, a default app in Android. I hope that's clear. Why did Newpipe not come up as an app there I could download I can't fathom. Please revisit my posts above with this info in mind.

Yup.

My Galaxy phones came with just about every app I really need. I've only added a few like a weather app and Speedtest.

Even Googling for something like "best apps" can be dangerous, as there are a lot of scammy sites out there. All I said is be sure you know exactly what you are downloading. Just look at some of the free apps on the Google Play store. Some of them are absolute crap.

I linked the stories for you earlier, so if you want you can read them, and if you feel like they don't apply to your situation, that's fine. Like I said, it's your phone and you know what you need or don't need.

I have no idea, it might be just fine. What is the stock YouTube app?

I got MyTube for Windows Phone because, well, it was highly touted, had some real nice features. It was one of the few for pay apps I downloaded.

I downloaded a heart rate monitor app to my two unactivated Android cheapo phones some months ago. It's Myworkouts. It was recommended by the maker of my heart rate monitor (Powr Labs), and approved by some users in Amazon reviews, so it didn't worry me. Works fine and it auto-transferred to my Galaxy.

I have maybe a dozen other apps that I've downloaded, several of them weather apps. I had a $2 weather app I LOVED on my Windows phone, Amazing Weather HD, but one day they said they were going to stop supporting it because "Windows Phone is not the stallion it once was." When the date arrived, it stopped working! I was SO SAD! It was fantastic. It had a mode where it showed approaching rain, a radar overview, basically. You could zoom in, zoom out, and believe it or not I could zoom down so far I could see my house! In detail! Of course, you could do that anywhere, AFAIK, on the planet! Guess it used Google Maps or something. Obviously, satellite imagery. I haven't found anything like it on Android... yet. A guy showed me something like that on his iPhone some years ago (approaching weather, very impressive and graphic), I guess that's where I got the idea.

I'll try to run with that idea that practically everything I'm going to want/need is already on my Galaxy! Well, I'm told that there will be ROMs or something, customisations coming out that I should maybe check out.

On my note, there was a folder with google apps. Several google apps come with Android.
 
Setting up new Galaxy S9.

I just set up Samsung Pay. It's asked me if I want it to be my default payment app. I suppose Google Pay is the default right now. Should I make it Samsung Pay? For the time being, I declined. I did set up SP with my paypal account, which entailed confirming a strange arrangement where Paypal sets aside a cash account that SP draws from while the cash account is credited from my checking account up the the amount required for a particular transaction... so I left the amount in the account at the default $10. Wacky arrangement, but seems probably acceptable. I figure to add my fave CC to SP. Anyway, leave the default contactless payment method Google? What are the pros and cons and what do you do?

Edit: Oh, Samsung Pay want permission to access photos and media on the phone. Why? Should I allow this or deny it? Anyway, for the moment I denied it. Also, left Google Pay my default payment app.
