So what are some good indian movies to watch.

Some with subtitles will be great. I've watched 'Dil Chahta hai' which was pretty good. I don't like the ones with fanciful and wild dancing which seem comedic to me.
Any suggestions?

Hera Pheri...it's a hilarious comedy.

Do you know any Hindi? Sometimes it helps with the double entendres, which are usually non-sexual.

I can understand a little bit of it. I've been raised in the US though my parents are from Pakistan.

"Kandahar Express" is a great movie.

I'm not Indian, some of my friends are ... it was recommended and I watched it ... I Liked it a lot. Excellent video, excellent audio, great story.

Category-wise, it's got some funny spots, it's got some serious parts ... but overall, I really liked it (and bought it).

The general plot is two Indian n00b reporters / video journalists are sent to Afghanistan to cover the conflict; funny things happen, sad things happen.

Give it a shot.

Dil Chahta Hai is my favorite Indian movie. 🙂

Black Friday - based on the aftermath of the 1993 Bombay serial blasts. The dude that played Tiger Memon fucking owned. Hard.

Satya - one man's descent into the Bombay underworld. Widely touted as one of the best Indian films of the 90s.

Company - claims to be fictitious but is loosely based on real-world underworld kingpin Dawood Ibrahim's fallout with his former associate Chota Rajan.

Dil Se - Shah Rukh Khan plays an radio journalist that goes apeshit crazy in love with a militant than plans on blowing shit up.

Rang De Basanti (features the lead actor from Dil Chahta Hai) - somewhat serious movie about a bunch of goofy slackers that grow up in a hurry when they decide to rage against the government. Most of the movie's charm comes from the dialogue and the actors' camaraderie - I wonder how much of it would be lost in translation if you rely solely on subtitles though.

Swades - Indian NASA scientist who spent most of his life in the States visits India and ends up deeply disturbed at the state of affairs in the rural countryside. He decides to be the change he wants to see in the country and set things right. Might seem kinda preachy in places but I thought it was very well done.

Awesome. Sounds like something that I'd like to watch as well.

I saw it recently as a non Hindi speaker and thought it suffered from even more forced interjection of musical scenes than one might expect. It also tried too hard to make the students seem "cool" (despite said goofiness). While common themes are expected, many scenes were too cliche. Also, all the audio being dubbed was a pity. Just not very refined overall. However, despite this, it was still worth watching -especially as an alternative to the typical Hollywood tripe du jour.

If nothing else, at least Alice Patten was easy on the eyes: :camera: :camera: 🙂

theprodigalrebel has a great list, but I'll add a few that I think might help bridge the gap between what you're likely familiar with and what you can expect in Indian movies:

Guru. Aish Rai is beautiful, and I thought the acting displayed by Abhishek was quite good.

Pyaar Ke Side Effects. A really funny movie. A good date movie.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Part comedy, part mystery. It got a little corny at times, but it was a lot of fun.

The Namesake isn't traditionally Bollywood, but it's a good movie that had a lot of the Bollywood people behind it.

Hmm, that's all that is immediately coming to mind.

Also, I watch a lot of Telugu movies, and they tend to be quite a lot different than most Hindi movies. One of my favorites is Yama Donga. There aren't any subtitles, but it's still a lot of fun.

A dancing scene from Yama Donga. NTR Jr., the actor in this scene, is a pretty skilled dancer.
