I see the banner from the American Cancer Society every now and again, and i'm just wondering what polyps are.

I assume as with most things, if you have to ask, you don't want to know.

Obstructions in the colon. Pretty good precursor to colon cancer. Not all polyps are indicitive of cancer, but it's something to get checked out. Normally done through a colonoscopy :disgust:

Had a grandmother and an uncle who both had colon cancer. I was havin' problems and the first thing they did was sent me in for a colonoscopy to look for polyps or other problems :(

Mid 20s. Luckily those are the only 2 folks who have had cancerish problems. My grandmothers stuff wasn't too bad, they just took out a section of the colon. My uncle had full blown cancer. Went in and got out all the polyps and other bad stuff. Was on chemo for a few months but is doing great now.

He had no idea until he went in to get a physical (works for a family business doing commercial refrigeration equipment. they always need someone with a class C license so they can have someone to drive the big rig if needed). At the test place they took a blood test for his class C. They said that he needed to go straight to the hospital, that his red blood count was extremely low and he was in danger of passing out at any time. Turns out he had been pooping it out, but nothing looked abnormal to him. He saw the same folks everyday so no one really noticed the subtle change in his color (getting paler).

I woulda sent you a PM, but figured the thread could use a bump. Polyps can be pretty serious stuff.

<< hmmm
well after careful examination of the ad, I have no clue
>>

You mean it's not obvious from the ad? They're little brown dudes who live in your colon. They're usually generally nice and fun-loving guys (like smurfs only brown) but here's the catch:
They eat fiber and roughage. If YOU don't eat enough fiber and rougage, then they starve and start to get angry.
And that's when they go bad.

But it's better off that you don't even risk them going bad, so the Polyp Police head up and bust the little turd burglars.

Duh.

Heh, I haven't seen that ad today. It seems that Anandtech is now trying to send us all on tree trips to South Carolina, instead :)
