Right now I'm at a hotel somewhere in between Huntsville and Birmingham. We have the first half of the day tomorrow to spend.... Montgomery is too far... we can either go to Birmingham, Huntsville, or somewhere in between.

What do you all recommend? We'd prefer to interact with locals more than see sites...

Edit: Apparantly, the BB no longer exists. BBQ it is. The problem is that you are there on a Monday when not much is going to be happening. Sloss Furnace in Birmingham is cool. Also, you can go up the mountain and see Vulcan's butt.
 
Huntsville has the Space and Rocket Center, but I don't know if that's a 1/2 day thing, and it's pretty touristy. Having grown up there, I can honestly say that there isn't going to be much to do Huntsville.
