On the NFSA boards, the participants label themselves as HOF's.

HOF stands for Human Owned by a Flyer.

There are 3 similar species that people mistake for a single one.

Sugar gliders (marsupials i think),
Southern flying squirrels, and Northern flying squirrels.

Sugar gliders and Southern flyers are the most common pets.

I'd recommend Southern over gliders because i believe gliders have a strong odor being a marsupial, (but i may be mistaken).

If you do decide to get a FS, i'd do a lot of research and ask questions on the nfsa boards.

Flying squirrels take it to a different level when it comes to care and attention, compared to something like a hampster or gerbil. They Crave and NEED attention, similar to the more-intelligent pet birds. Plus remember they are nocturnal so they may not keep the exact hours as you (though they will play in the daytime just as well as the night time).

my old roomate had 2 of them... they were cool, but they used to piss and sh1t all over my shirt and wherever they hang out. I used to chuck sugarglider turds at him all the time because i would find them on the couch.

After reading more, I think maybe a Southern Flying Squirrel would be a little more suitable. Like someone earlier mentioned, they don't have the 'bad smell' that sugar gliders do.

I think we may find that with most pets though :)

We have a hampster right now, but he doesn't do much, so we want something that will be really exciting.

Does anyone have any experience with sugar gliders? They look too good to be true

Expensive... but, how about a tiger?

My sister had sugar gliders, said they were nocturnal, loud, messy, and liked escaping. Have fun! :D
