No not every year. Most years. The data is very strong and quite clear on this point.

You've posted that same graph twice before I think. It's been debunked twice before as well. Let me guess: you don't remember? You claim to be a science based guy, but apparently you know nothing about data selection, controls, confounding variables, enzymes, regulatory mechanisms, molecules or critical data analysis in general. As before, you have a presupposed agenda, of a subject you're very ignorant on, and you simply google around looking for support. If the title looks right, you then post it. Nevermind if it really supports your point or not.

While the vitamin D argument isn't necessarily wrong, it isn't necessarily right either. Point being you simply don't know what "boosting the immune system" means. As before, your understanding of a very complex subject is woefully simplified. Do you want to tell us again about how the immune system is like a guy in a house? Guess what, vitamin D actually suppresses some immune responses, in particular the most effective specific antiviral response. Does that mean you shouldn't take supplements? No, not really. Does it mean you don't really understand what you're talking about? Definitely.
 
It's stunning after reading this thread how many people really have no idea what the flu actually is.

It seems people think that whenever they get sick in any way from october to march it is automatically the flu.

I guess if people can't even properly identify the illness you can't expect them to understand how something as complicated as a vaccine works.

Thats very nice but its still called "stomach flu". Just like a "cold" is not cold at all, but still called a "cold".
 
Suppliments: You need a balance.

I for one was a strong proponent of Vitamin C for helping prevent illness, but I have since heard that they have found no real positive link between increased ingestion of C and the occurance of diseases. It does seem to help get rid of the bug, but it does not make it so you do not get it in the first place.

That being said, if you have DEFICIENCIES in any of your nutrients, your system may be compromised and you may catch things easier or get them worse, but that is another matter.


Now, vaccines? They try to immunize for the strain that is coming through, and they usually get it right enough to prevent many cases. The thing I am not sure about is similar strains, whether some viral immunities may give a partial resistance to others because of their similarity. I do not know if this is entirely true (the bonding of antibodies to antigens that do not exactly meet the same composition as the one you are currently infected with...) Kind of like two pieces that do not fit exactly, but still kind of fit....

But saying that you have had the flu and been fine is BS. you do not walk around all hunkey dorey with a 104 fever. What, you didn't HAVE a 104 fever? Guess what, you did not have the flu. (OK, some may only be 102...)

Also, as others have said, unless you are behind enemy lines under fire or somehow transported back in time to WWII behind the lines in France, you should NOT be in ANY operating capacity while exhibiting symptoms. You could HURT OTHER PEOPLE because of your diminished capacity and you could also spread the disease. It would NOT be smart for the armed forces to sed you out with anything more serious than the sniffles unless it was an immediate threat.

I myself have been very sick at times. Feeling all wonky and running like a faucet while still going to work (no real "sick" days here unless you are out 3 or more days in a row... and I think you need a Dr's note). But I know it wasn't the flu (no high fever).

That said, if you are in a profession with a LOT of contact with people, like teaching, MAN UP and take your damn shot ya wuss! You stand a higher chance of catching and spreading it, and with cases like Teaching or Emergency Care, we would all rather have you feeling ookey for a week than be completely out for the same time along with a half dozen other people.

All of the ignorance that surrounds the flu shot comes from people who have no idea what the flu actually is. People who get the flu shot will get what you refer to as "the stomach flu", and then start spouting off how the flu shot doesn't work, when in reality it worked perfectly.

They think that feeling like shit for a few days after they got the flu shot means that the flu shot gave them the flu.

People think that strep throat is the flu. They think the common cold is the flu. They think that stomach viruses are the flu.

People just don't get it. It's really not that difficult to understand.

In fact, I recently realized that I have not known a single person to actually be diagnosed with the flu. I have never had the flu. I'm 30 years old. I know lots of people who get really sick in the winter and lots of people who get stomach flus.

So before there were flu shots or with our without the flu shot, I still have not gotten the flu.

Yeah, I'm certainly not in here as an advocate of the flu shot. I've never had the flu in my 27 years and I've never gotten the shot.

I'm just here to help dispel the ignorance regarding the flu and the flu shot.

Except flu shots are proven to work, at least for the strains they are designed to prevent. There is certainly no guarantee that they predicted all the strains correctly though.
 
very interesting. indeed it does say that argentine children did not have the useless, cross-reactive/pathologic antibodies because they were not vaccinated.

although it does not stipulate which proteins our h1n1 vaccine target and if they confer antibodies that are the suspect pathologic ones

Which is why Gardisil was fast-tracked by the FDA and got to end-around most of the basic clinical trial testing rules, right?

It is possible that a side effect of a flu shot may be due an allergy to chicken eggs.

My mother has this allergy although she can eat eggs without issue. But the typical flu vaccination in which chicken eggs are used to incubate the vaccine makes her very sick and for days.

Soooo the correlation of being sick after the flu is real for a small part of the population ... may not be the flu.

I get the flu shot most years & it has been years since I have had the flu or even a cold for that matter. Not being around rug rats is the best reason I have to explain this.

I also wonder how someone who has never had the flu (and diagnosed) knows what the symptoms actually are? Colds can make one very achy also.
 
Well I've had the flu every year since I moved to Boston so this year I went and got one as obvioulsy going without wasn't working. The Flu kicks my ass and it really kickied my ass last year. I was sicker than a dog for over two weeks and had lingering effect 3 to 4 weeks later. The worse I've ever had it.

Hopefully it'll spare me the agony this year.
