When I was a kid, my dad used to buy fish steaks (not sardines, but sold next to them). We would get them in hot sauce and eat them on crackers. They were good, but I was always grossed out by the crunch of the bones and seeing the vertebrae in the sauce left in the can.

I read an article about how good Spanish Sardines are when they're grilled...which reminded me of Alton Brown stating that canned sardines are a great source of Omega 3s....which made me think...I need to revisit this food and see if I can man up and eat a few for the health benefits...If I can learn to like them as a meal.

I bought 3 cans last night. 1 can of sardines in oil...1 can in hot sauce, and 1 can of "kipper snacks"...just to try. My understanding is that the sardines will likely have no heads or tails, but I should eat them whole other than that....or mash them up with a fork and make a fish spread. Is that pretty
much it, or does anyone here have some other advice on how I should go about eating these things.

After eating dinner last night, I wasn't hungry enough to open a can. I might try them today or tomorrow.

Tell me....How do YOU eat sardines? Any suggestions? I'm just trying to get ready for when I roll that metal tab back and have to down these things. Thanks-

I just put them on crackers. I cut off a chunk with a fork, and then put it on a cracker. I prefer FinnCrisp and Kavli for the crackers.

Edit:
If you have cats, you'll be a hero if you let them clean the tin ;^)

I assume a nice french baguette would work as an alternative to crackers
I read in another thread to try them with cream cheese too...it's on my list of things to try if I can make it through my first 3 cans.

In may I was in the Cinque Terre region of Italy and a restaurant there had a Sardine tasting, and they served them about 7 different ways. Fried, grilled, sauteed, stuffed and some other ways and they were all really good. But these were freshly caught sardines, not out of a can.

I always used to get the cheaper sardines that come in a variety of sauces (hot sauce/tomato/mustard)

one day i saw these Cloverleaf Brisling Sardines in olive oil. They were more expensive but gave them a try and i am hooked. Give them a try, you will never go back to the cheaper kind.

I read that the ones in sauces are usually lower grade and they're simply hiding off flavors in the sauces. I'm starting with BumbleBee brand or Chicken of the Sea or something like that to start with....if I survive the cheap ones, I'll start working toward the more expensive ones.

I also read that crisp white wines go best with the sardines in olive oil. I look forward to wine/cheese/sardine pairing.

I used to buy them smoked by the pound. Ate all just straight, out of the bag.

Brunswick kippered herring is very good, and not especially pricey. They sometimes get it at the dollar store.

They've got Season brand unsalted 3.75 tins, pack of 12, on Amazon for only $993.50!

I was gonna' jump on 'em since there's still 10 left, but the $6.49 shipping really kills it. :p

Scroll down for goodness!

My mom would cut up some onion, red peppers and mix it with a little bit of vinegar. Put that on some sardines and eat it over rice. Add a little soy sauce & it's pretty tasty. I've had them intomato sauce as well, but I enjoy it moreso with the vinegar spicy stuff.

I prefer sardines in olive oil, but I like it all. I tried every type of sardines available from Publix, Trader Joe's, Costco, Walmart, and Kroger. After trying all the different brands and style, I like King Oscar sardines in extra virgin olive oil double layer and Season sardines in pure olive oil the best.

I like sardines straight from the can, with fried egg and steamed rice, in salad, on cracker with hot sauce and sliced avocados, in pasta, on french bread, etc. It's all delicious.
