Coming from someone who "did the right thing" when Dell sent me the wrong item last year (an LCD projector instead of a laptop battery, $1400 price difference) and ended up with my wife being threatened by them for not returning the item immediately (she was pregnant, very sick, and had a large dog and a 2 year old to care for while I was in Iraq), SCREW DELL!

Seriously, keep it. Those bastards don't deserve any consideration from anyone. :|
 
l they charge you, if they try to charge you send it back
you do not need 2 anyway and won't make money on it (well i guess you will since you didn't pay out of pocket for it...... yet...)

if any compaq product showed up on my doorstep, after i was done projectile vomiting, i'd send it back. then i'd disinfect my doorstop.
 
Id open it up, use it, keep it for at least a few months, then sell it.
- you didnt sign for it and hopefully the sender has insurance on it

I figured I'd get a response like this. I'm sure I'd get a response like this if I replaced Compaq with HP, Dell, Microsoft, Apple, Phillips, Panasonic, or any brand name company. Because no matter what someone is going to say this.

I'm happy with my laptop and it runs great and every review I've read has almost nothing but good things to say about it. So bite me.

Don't need to, they can not charge your card without your authorization, and if they do just dispute it and you will get your money back.
 
I'd give it back... for all you know it was some kid's gift and I'm sure the people who paid the money are a little upset too. How would you feel if you were in there shoes? We'd see a thread "@#$@ing Dell didn't send me my PS3 package I ordered a week and a half ago!"

You'll feel a lot better giving it back, anyways.

If this was some poor slob selling this thing on eBay for Christmas money, I'd definitely return it. This is Dell we're talking about here, though. Think about the thousands of customers that they screw over each year with defective products and crummy support. Is Dell going out of their way to help them once the warranty expires?

Explain to me again... Why should someone reward their crummy behavior with an act of charity, considering that they aren't going to really care either way?
 
I'd call them anonymously and tell them of their errors...then hang up giggling.
 
Something like this happened to me once from Buy.com around 1997, I was shopping around for a DVD player/decoder card package, and I added one to the cart, but I decided against buying it. A day or so later I get an email indicating that I was to receive a Soundblaster DVD/decoder kit even though I didn't order it. I received correspondance from Buy.com about the error in time before UPS was to deliver, so I refused delivery and avoided any legal entanglements.

Like chrisms said, justify it however you want.

If people are getting so screwed over, why don't they take their business elsewhere? If consumers are getting screwed during their first transactions with Dell, why didn't they do more research on the company? If you're worried about something happening after their standard warranty period, why not buy an extended warranty? Or better yet, honor the terms of the sale that you agreed to by purchasing from Dell.

The fact of the matter is, another's action should not have an effect on your own morals/ethics. What happened to doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do?

Also, this post is not supposed to be judgemental. If you're going to do something that is wrong, don't try to justify it or make excuses. Accept the fact that it's wrong and move on. I personally don't know if I'd return it, given I've never been in the situation. I would like to think I would return it, but I don't know. But if I did keep, I'd admit to myself it's not the right thing to do.
 
Tough call, but considering how vicious companies are these days, I would call them and tell them. It sucks because you are afraid they'll want it back.

But if you didn't sign for it there is no evidence that you recieved it. IF it went so far as to go to court you could probably play dumb and there is no proof for their side or yours. Would be a wonderful deadlock.
 
be honest with yourself, call them and request some answers, if they let you keep it, so be it. if it was by mistake, it won't hurt to see how they respond, they might give a highend laptop in return of the package. even if they don't treat you, always tell yourself if this is something you want your kids to hear about in the future - otherwise when reality catches up to you, losing track of what's important will hit you so hard, you'd wish you never owned a PS3. good luck, buddy~

Uh, no, that won't happen. The call goes to India, and you get some poor sap who has no authority to tell you that you need to send it back. He might even have to request paid postage to return it (my wife did), and they WILL be pricks about it.

Dell has earned the result: Keep it. If it happens again to me, I certainly will and will have absolutely no qualms about it. Once my Dell D600 dies (it already is -- quality!), I'm buying anyone else's product to replace it.

That's what you say. What would you realistically do? Ebay it right? I mean there's a lot of things I don't want. If a new Core2Duo laptop showed up but its some 14.1" with XGA (not SXGA) then yes I woudl throw that POS out on ebay or whatever. If I don't like it, it goes on ebay. But let's be honest, we would probably want to keep it in some way or the other instead of returning it.
