Trump is objecting to conscience - because of the appalling historical meddling of the US - and humanitarian admissions, as conservatives do, because they're mean by nature. One of my problems with all of this is it reeks of a comment by someone who barely leaves the US to people who barely leave the US. Yes, a lot of these countries are in various stages of development (reasons can be debated), but to call them shitholes shows a lack of understanding about these countries esp. when it comes to immigration. I'm from West Africa. Life is hard for a lot of people, but life is good for a lot of people as well. We are a country with some hard working ingenious people (that's why West Afrticans do so well in any field they get into to). And we all don't live in huts, just like all Americans don't all live in double wide trailers. There is incredible wealth and incredible poverty and people trying to find opportunities to improve their lives.

There were a combination of factors that led to a ton of educated Nigerians to come here. Differences skew the groups and large differences are found within these groups in this chart as well.

Also as a FYI: if we measured equal education or IQ levels, the African immigrants will be a worse pick than some other groups, since their successive generations will start to regress to the mean. A lot of people talk about the first immigrants to come, but the successive generations of some groups fare worse to differing degrees over time in the US.

Take out the minorities in the general population. Take out Asians in the illegal/immigrant category. It’ll look worse for the non-white Hispanic population then. This is about crime, but it happens with education and other measures as well.

It's not widely acknowledged or realized by people presently but the fact is that the people who "settled" in what's now the continental USA originally, the colonists from Britain, were the poor, the offal, the perpetually unproductive, the criminal element, the people that the British wanted to get rid of any way they could. I don't think I made the argument that Nigeria was fully developed from a western view. But to argue that certain issues reflect a whole country is ridiculous as well. I live on the east coast, which is largely different from the Midwest. Btw, I have friends who upon graduation and working in industry for a few years voluntarily decided to leave their 6 figure jobs and move back to some West African countries. My argument was strictly to contrast Trump's view that Nigerians live in huts as if the whole country is living in abject poverty.
