I turned around this scenario 180deg on the last chili cook-out competition at work.
Instead of spending hours making chili frm scratch I bought the canned stuff and added some more chili peppers. ROFL! 😀

I should have gone for the 'hottest chilli' prize. 😛

Same thing that I thought of.

Having soup dribbling down the side of my face and shirt probably would not impress everyone with my savoir-faire.

That sucks, I'd have sucked down a quart or two, I'm sure . . . but enough pointless empathising. What I'd like to know, is how do you manage to attain crusty outside/light inside bagette quality goodness in a home oven?

You must reveal your secret!!

Well, although it sounds like it was probably GREAT!!! And I'm pretty sure I'd have taken some, I think some posters hit on it in this thread.

#1.) It takes a bowl. Sooooo.......people already may have a plate full & don't really wanna go for the "bowl" food, so they simply skip it regardless of how they think it looks.

(Not me.........I love good food, so shine it........if it looks good, I'll try it!)

#2.) I am someone who worries a bit about the *mushy* stuff at a pot luck.

While yours was probably more *wet* than *mushy*, I'll use the analogy of "Spinach Dip". I do not like spinach dip. Even when it's prepped in those neat little cut-out loaves of bread........(i.e. bread dipping bowl). I just don't like spinach dip. I makes me wanna yack. Therefore, I might offend somebody by not taking some, however, a dip is also a bit easier to dish out than a soup, so perhaps the #1 & #2 combined are what killed it for ya.

???

Had they tried the soup, and not said anything, then I'd call them ungrateful.

However, you must have missed the memo that highlights the fact most people don't like broccoli/cheese soup.

Next year bring beer. 😀

maybe if you used styrofoam coffee cups to sip from instead of bowls... it would have been a bigger hit.

bowls are awkward.

I don't think you should be offended by it. There were probably lots of people there who thought, "that looks good, but I'd better not", for the reasons others have given. I love broccoli/cheese soup, but I wouldn't get it in that situation because

1) It takes time to sit down and eat soup and we get to leave work as soon as we're finished eating at the party so I want to just grab something that's quick to eat.

2) I'd want to avoid sitting there eating and talking to someone and spilling it, or having it dribble down my chin, or getting broccoli stuck in my teeth.

3) If it's not sit-down, it would be hard to hold the soup bowl and bread and spoon and eat and talk.

4) I probably wouldn't get any of the bread either because I'd figure it was for the people who were going to be eating the soup.

5) I and most other people just like to sample lots of different stuff at those kinds of things and soup isn't really a sampling kind of thing. Get too little and you do worry about it offending someone, get a whole bowl and it's just wasteful.

It's not that they didn't want to eat your soup, it's just that they didn't want to eat soup at a party.

LOL

We had our potluck today too and I made jumbalaya with sausage. It was one of only like 3 hot dishes, so it was completely gone at the end. 🙂

so every year our unit of about 15 people have a christmas party on the wednesday b4 christmas. Everyone cooks and brings in an item of your choise.
So last night, I spent about 3-4 hours making this excellent pot of broccoli/cheese soup, and baked fresh french bread baguettes.
I made everything completely from scratch with all fresh ingredients. Several people sampled it after it was done and said how excellent it was.

however at the party today, only 2 people out of 15 (besides me) even attempted to try it. I know this, because its easy to see how many people took styrofoam bowls. 1 of those 2 also told me how excellent the soup was... but I took 90% of what i made back home with me. Nearly all of everythign else that was brought in was completely gone.

fvck that party next year... bunch of ungrateful losers.

It happens, don't fret. What you brought sounds great.

You were offended by that?

Since the principle ingrediants were brocolli and cheese, you should probalby be grateful your office didn't indulge too much in it. Crop-dusting FTL!

That's what I was thinking.

Although I'd be a little disappointed that not more people tried it, I don't think I'd be offended.

I usually bring cookies. 🙂 Since my cookies are fameous at work. (Not really sure why..but they make a big deal out of 'em)

Dude, soup gets no respect. You've got to stick to the desserts and discretely shaped food like meatballs.

yeah..just thinking...i'd rather get snacks and sample a LOT of the smaller treats and what people bring than get a whole cup of SOUP...soup is no good for such occasions.

I bet the soup tasted terrific. How about posting the recipe and I'll get my gf to make it this weekend?
I bet the soup was really good too. I definitely would have tried some of it along with the bread. I'm another one that hopes you post the recipe. 🙂

You are over-reacting, if I were at the party I wouldn't have touch that neither, I hate cheese soup of ANY kind...

So don't take it personally, I'm sure it was excellent
