Well i'm just short of 40 but i want change from what we have now. What you may find interesting is that i'm very conservative, but i do not identify with this administration. This is not a true republican adminisration - it's the beginning of fascism in this man's opinion.

I remember films like War Games and The Day After and all the nuclear winter talk. During the 70s, what I remember is NASA and the space flights and the strive for reaching the cosmos. The rise of Khomeini was a bit threatening until the Reagan era and the resurrection of the Soviet boogeyman.

I miss the days when space travel was in the front of everyone's minds. This nation has become rooted in selling fear instead of inspiration.

I'm old enough that we had drills in school where we went an hid in the basement and assumed the position to kiss our butt goodbye when the A-bombs fell.

I remember my dad worrying about being recalled (he was in Navy reserves) for the Korean War.

I watched Vietnam unfold while in high school, recognizing that it was likely part of my future. I choose to be pro-active and enlisted in the Navy.

The cold war was clearly always hanging around until the USSR started falling apart.

Iraq war #1, really kind of minor except for those that served.

Today I'm scared shitless at what our own government is doing to destroy this country is some misguided greed for power and huge sums of money. Today I can see the possibility of the destruction of this country, as I never have before. The enemy doesn't have to invade, they are already in the seat of power and are systematically dismantling the protections we have.

Unlike most of the above when the people turned to our leaders for a solution and resolution, today they are the problem and we must retake our country from these criminals. The threat is not hiding in a cave in Afghanistan, but sitting at a desk in Washington.

'Cliffs Notes:
* there has always been something

* today's 'something' is the most alarming and dangerous

* today's threat to our country will be the most difficult to defeat

I'm a tree hugging liberal and proud of it, and for years, I've been hoping that more true conservatives like you would wake up and figure out that the Bushwhacko's are not "conservative" in any way shape or form.

I understand of the word, "conservative" to mean being deliberate of thought to make sure proposed changes will have the intended results with no, or at least minimum, unintended and unforseen negative consequenses.
  • Spending the nation into generations of debt to start and support a war based on lies is not conservative.
  • Cutting taxes for the ultra rich 1% of Americans and corporate donors is not conservative.
  • Outing a covert CIA operative for political gamesmanship is not conservative.
  • Violating the U.S. Constitution by spying on American citizens without a warrant is not conservative.
  • Claiming Presidential privilege to commit such violations, despite any legal or historical precedent to the contrary, is not conservative.
  • Ignoring competent warnings before disasters like Katrina is not conservative.
In fact, each and all of these constitute radical thrashings of American law, legal tradition and social values. :|

Folks, he has two years left and then we will have a new president, probably a Democrat, and the Bush presidency will be only a memory........

With respect, you make some compelling and markedly optimistic notions for our future as a Country. For me - being in the first Gulf War was quite an experience, and just like the Veitnam guys like my older Brother (and Father), all of us that have served seem to bring stories of Military and political will with us wherever we go. What we do in life shapes as individuals. And i an only hope that the next administration has the vision, and hope, and will to actually change the course of politicing back to favoring the general populus in most situations. We need a shift of not just politicing, but to make wise, yet strong and concise decisions that will benefit us as a Country. We need to be able to take care of ourselves lest we not have a Country left to help others. So much work to be done right here in the USA. And it all starts with integrity at the highest level. Without that, we have nothing. We need to put integrity back at the top.

My father is 76. He frequently discusses with his friends and family how this is the most fearful any of them have ever been for the future of the country, and the world in general. Most of those whom I have spoken to who lived through the red scare and cuban missle crisis feel things are actually just as bad now - mostly because they don't see a 'right way out'. They all agree that there has never been (at least in the last 60 years) a more divided and angry public.
