If Titan comes out with let's say 50% performance increase over the 7970 ghz (this is theoretical so let's just assume it to be true), do you think AMD will be pressured into having to release an 8970 that is roughly equivalent (+/- 5%) to that performance? In other words, should AMD's next release be on par with NVidia's next release (strictly single card releases)?

The 50% is just a made up number, but it applies to any real increase.

I just wonder how either company would look releasing a lesser "flagship" card? It doesn't even make sense in my mind the 780 would be less than the Titan.

Wondering if the progress will continue or step backwards is what it comes down to.

Everything in your post is made up. HD8000 series is also used for OEM rebranding, so I am quite certain it wont be named that either.

AMD cant just release a card because someone else does. It takes time, alot of time.

looks like AMD is going to focus on driver improvements and amazing bundles for first half. there are clear indications that HD 8000 for desktop is a H2 2013 event.

I think AMD will not be able to match titan. from past experience AMD has stayed away from big dies (500+ sq mm) . nothing is going to change. AMD would try to hit 85 - 90% of the performance of Titan for a much lesser price around USD 500. AMD is serious about GAMING EVOLVED and using content as one of the cornerstones for pushing graphics sales. With their aggressive game bundles and competitive performance AMD should do well.

NV will try to continue selling mid-end chips as top of the line (will be GK114 as GTX780). Leaving GK110 as a premium @ very high prices. However AMD will release HD8970 just after GTX780 literally destroying it and being just 10% slower than titan.
People who bought titan will cry desperately cause they will be able to get 90% of titan's performance at just ~$500 in a couple of months.
Thats all.

It is highly unlikely that a Titan will be 50% faster than a 7970ghz across the board. I would expect it to 30-45% faster than a 7970 ghz because at 1440p with newer titles the 7970 ghz is already 10-25% faster than a 680 stock.

Even if it is indeed 50% faster all amd has to do is release 8970 oc which is 30% faster than a 7970 ghz which is no biggie considering a highly oced 7970 ghz is itself 20% faster than a stock one, or within 15% of the Titan for 60% of the cost and amd is all set.

It doesn't really matter how much faster GeForce Titan is if the card costs $1000+. There's no market force to make AMD release a competitor faster.

You should let AMD know, I'm sure they can just pull a new one out their arse...

Don't be so impatient. You'll get your post count up so you can post in FS/FT.

Why post that? He has a valid point, there have already been a couple of thread s on this topic already.

I'm sure AMD could easily launch a 7980 for example which could have a higher core count than the 7970 etc.. But then again why when so few would buy it.

To be honest AMD doesn't need to release....anything to compete with the Titan. If the rumored price is right I think only the most hardcore enthusiasts will jump on it. I was willing to spend up to $600-$650 for a Titan but $900 is simply way out of my price bracket and I know there are a lot of people who feel the same way.

Pretty much this. Let's not kid ourselves, this is a 1000$ GPU and barely anyone except the most extreme enthusiasts will buy it. This will have little effect on GPU sales, AMD doesn't need a counter product.

The 78/9xx and GTX 600 series will still sell very well for both sides, because the prices are far more reasonable - and most users will not shell out more than 200-300$ for a new GPU.

I find it hard to believe that the performance of titan with 50% more bandwidth than the 680, will be more than 50% better than the 680, an already extremely bandwidth bottlenecked card.
