So, time for a new car: Corolla vs Civic vs Mazda3 vs ?

sentra

but don't even consider the sentra. it's made in mexico. i'd go for either a corolla for its reliability or a mazda3 for its good looks

sentra, and get the se-r or spec v version, i got my spec v for 17,300 brand new, with a bunch of options, you could get one for maybe 16,500

I drove a 2002 Sentra for a good long while. Great little car, ultra reliable, and if you buy it secondhand the Nissan nameplate does not hold the same cachet as Honda or Toyota so you save a bundle. 🙂

I would consider the Hyundai Elantra for the heck of it as well, you might like it.

buying a NEW hyundai is not much smarter than buying a new ford or chevy. you know you'll just lose out on the resale. i'd shop for a used elentra GT.

Although you said you want a "new" car, you can buy a used Sentra with 30k miles for like 11k.

you could buy a 5-speed NEW 2004 sentra for $9999 a couple of months ago. a cd player and AC costs $1000 extra. 11k for a used one with 30k miles? ouch.

This was the "loaded" model. Yeah you find a stripped down version for $7 k with low mileage.

New civics are garbage. It's an old crappy model. Get the mazda or the corolla.

Really though, don't buy a new econobox. It puts you that much closer to losing the will to live. That money spent on something two years older would get you twice the car. But I'm sure you "just want new", so enjoy your plastic box 😉

I like the Mazda 3, it's a bit small for me, though. Both the Civic and the Corolla can hold they resale value, but they're boring.

One thing sucky about the corolla is that it has beam suspension in the back. I think the sentra is also a dead beam in the back. It's the FWD equivalent of a solid axle except it's dead of course. Fine for grandma putzing around, but it's mainly a cost cutting measure.

Corolla's motor is much more modern than the civic, DOHC with intake cam phasing.
