One lives in my neighborhood, along with a possum. I've encountered both on a dark porch before. I accidentally cornered the possum once, and it hissed to warn me off but otherwise, the rule of thumb around here is live and let live. I don't bother them, they don't bother us.

I always thought it would be kinda cool to have one as a pet. They seem so cuddly and fluffy I just want to give it a hug. *snorgle*

It might let you. I've heard of people not paying attention, and petting them like cats, only realizing later it was a wild skunk. I don't recommend that as they're carriers of rabies. I've seen them for sale in pet shops, though it's been awhile.

My sister in-law said the same thing, they had one as a pet down in Texas, supposedly you can get them descented.

I've known people who have kept them as pets. They will overeat if you let them; don't let them get obese. Make sure they don't get out; they lack any homing instinct. Also, there isn't an approved rabies vaccine for skunks in the US yet, but there is one in Canada. They are naturally active at dusk and dawn, so expect them to be sleeping or hiding most of the day.
